The Game Developer’s Conference 2026, which has now been renamed GDC Festival of Gaming, will take place from March 9 to 13 in San Francisco. All software houses and various development teams are invited to the event, and panels and appearances by various important industry names are expected.

Among others, Hideo Kojima, the "father" of Metal Gear Solid and creator of Death Stranding, had initially made himself available for a speech; unfortunately, however, this will not be the case. With a message posted on his team's X profile, Kojima Productions, all fans are informed that Kojima will not be able to attend the event.

"We regret to inform you that Hideo Kojima will no longer be able to attend this year's GDC Festival of Gaming," the message reads. "We understand that this will be disappointing for fans and attendees who were looking forward to hearing him speak, and we want to offer our deepest apologies. Although Hideo Kojima will not be able to attend, Kojima Productions is still excited to be part of this year's festival with team members present throughout the week."

This is a rather unusual refusal: it can happen that a personality misses an appointment at the last minute, perhaps for health reasons, but here we are talking about a denial a month before the event. Obviously, none of us have Kojima's agenda in hand, so we have no way of knowing what impediments caused this refusal.

Hideo Kojima recently appeared on X in the laborious role of someone engaged in video editing, a sign that some announcements might be coming soon. While waiting to learn more, we remind you of our Review of his latest work: Death Stranding 2: On The Beach.
