The Original Trilogy

The first three films of the franchise, released in 1977, 1980, and 1983 respectively, make up the so-called “original trilogy”. The films tell the adventures of Luke Skywalker and his master Obi-Wan Kenobi. The protagonists, with the help of the Rebel Alliance, led by Princess Leia, are engaged in the fight against the Dark Side of the Force (an energy field that some evildoers use for malicious purposes and to increase their power).

The cast includes, among others, Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Peter Cushing, Alec Guinness, David Prowse, James Earl Jones, Anthony Daniels, Kenny Baker, and Peter Mayhew.

  • Episode IV – A New Hope (1977)
  • Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
  • Episode VI – Return of the Jedi (1983)

After the global success of the first films and a resurgence in popularity thanks to comics and novels, the Star Wars Universe returned to the big screen with the prequel trilogy. Qui-Gon Jinn and his apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi escort Queen Amidala, who is seeking a peaceful solution to a dispute. During their journey, the protagonists discover the mysterious return of the Sith (individuals who use the dark side of the Force). Anakin Skywalker, a young man with a predisposition for using the Force, also appears in the films.

The first chapter of the trilogy divided critics and audiences but was a commercial success (grossing 924,305,084 dollars). The protagonists are Liam Neeson, Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman, Jake Lloyd, Ian McDiarmid, Anthony Daniels, Kenny Baker, Pernilla August, Frank Oz, and Ray Park.

  • Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999)
  • Episode II – Attack of the Clones (2002)
  • Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (2005)

When is Star Wars Day?

Star Wars Day is celebrated on May 4th every year. This day was chosen for a clever pun between “May the Force be with you” and “May the fourth be with you”. Leonard Hofstadter, one of the protagonists of The Big Bang Theory, perfectly explains the matter in a scene from the sitcom:

So… happy Star Wars Day, May the Force be with you!
