With the announcement of the Golden Globes 2026 nominations, a new awards season officially opens. This is the period of the cinematic year from December to March when awards, ceremonies, and statuettes for the world of cinema, television, and entertainment follow one another: a long race of statements, acceptance speeches, and public appearances that will conclude with the awarding of the Academy Awards and Emmy Awards.

The Golden Globes 2026 nominations have just been announced in a live stream and have given the first verdicts regarding the films that have the best chance of being the most awarded in the coming months. The general impression is that, compared to other years, the games are pretty much set: films like A Battle After Another, Sentimental Value, Hamnet, and Frankenstein are set to dominate the season, and there seems to be little room left for possible last-minute surprises.

However, pay attention to the second-tier nominees, such as foreign films (the Iranian A Simple Accident and the Korean No Other Choice) which do not yet enjoy substantial theatrical releases in the United States and internationally, and therefore are not yet truly in the spotlight. These titles could become uncomfortable competitors in the coming weeks for the so-called frontrunners, the favorites of these hours.

Golden Globes 2026 Nominations in Brief: What's Important to Know

With the announcement of the Golden Globes 2026 nominations, a very clear picture of the main contenders in the field already emerges. The absolute frontrunner is Paul Thomas Anderson with A Battle After Another, who leads the race ahead of Hamnet and Frankenstein, while Richard Linklater achieves a historic result with his two films directed this year competing for best comedy/musical. Probably one of the two has "pushed out" Wicked - Part 2 from the sextet of finalists in the best comedy/musical category, despite its five overall nominations (including those for both protagonists). Also, pay attention to the surprise Sentimental Value, on the rise and boasting a very strong trio of actors in the running: Renate Reinsve, Elle Fanning, and Stellan Skarsgård.

On the acting front, a very tight duel between Leonardo DiCaprio and Timothée Chalamet is looming, but the most competitive category of all is that of Best Supporting Actor, a tight quintet composed of Adam Sandler, Benicio Del Toro, Jacob Elordi, Paul Mescal, Sean Penn, and Stellan Skarsgård. The international presence is also very high: numerous foreign actors and titles enter the main categories, confirming the global orientation of the voters.

For animation, it's a historic edition: the quintet includes a highly anticipated anime (Demon Slayer), a popular title like KPop Demon Hunters, traditional Disney productions, and two high-level European productions like Arco and Little Amélie, a sign of an increasingly diversified landscape.

In the Best Foreign Language Film category, the picture is surprisingly competitive: Sentimental Value, A Simple Accident, and The Secret Agent are also present in the main categories and all come from Cannes or Venice. A clear signal: to enter the international conversation, one must go through major festivals and have a strong US distributor. Also noteworthy is the continuity of the "Guadagnino factor": once again, an actress from his creative universe, Julia Roberts, obtains a prestigious nomination.

On the series front, there are no upheavals: few novelties, with The Studio as the only truly relevant new entry, and the confirmation of the duel already seen at the Emmys between Severance and The Pitt. Jacob Elordi and Jeremy Allen White receive double nominations thanks to their TV roles alongside their film roles. The comedy categories maintain a familiar balance between Hacks, The Bear, Only Murders in the Building, and Nobody Wants This, with no real upsets but with a generally more open competition. In the miniseries category, Adolescence seems poised to win everything, again.

What are the Golden Globes and why are they important

The Golden Globes are the first "heavyweight" award given at the beginning of each year, in the first days of January. The winners are voted on by a jury composed of about a hundred foreign press journalists belonging to the HFPA, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (which also includes Italian colleagues). The voters are foreign critics and reporters based in Hollywood or with international visibility, often with different tastes from those in the United States: this is why some films that win at the Golden Globes often struggle to gain favor with a more traditional and American jury like that of the Academy. It is also an award expressed by critics, who often reward less popular and more auteur titles, with a certain predilection for international cinema.

A distinctive feature of the categories is the division of the main categories (Best Film, Best Series, Best Lead Performers) between drama and comedy/musical for films, series, and performances: this leads to a broader list of nominees compared to the Oscars.
