Dave Bautista will be Kratos in the live-action God of War series produced by Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television for Prime Video. The choice concludes the search for a new lead that began after Ryan Hurst's departure and will have an immediate consequence on production: sequences already completed with the previous actor will have to be re-filmed.

Confirmation arrived on August 20. People reported that an Amazon representative directly confirmed the new casting, while Variety indicated Bautista as now definitively attached to the project. The actor, known for Drax in Guardians of the Galaxy and Glossu Rabban in Denis Villeneuve's two Dune films, entered negotiations with Amazon in early August.

The change of Kratos stems from a problem that occurred during filming. Hurst, chosen for the role in January and already on set in Vancouver since February, injured a bicep during a stunt in June, requiring surgery. The recovery time was not compatible with the series' schedule, and in July, Amazon and Sony therefore decided to replace him. Four episodes had already been filmed before the interruption.

With Bautista in the role, God of War is expected to return to production in the coming weeks. Variety reports that all scenes performed by Hurst will be reshot and that Prime Video has ordered two seasons, planned to be filmed back-to-back. Alongside the new Kratos, Callum Vinson remains as Atreus, with a cast that also includes Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Max Parker as Heimdall, and Alastair Duncan as Mimir.

The series begins with the Norse phase of the video game saga and reprises the premise of God of War from 2018: Kratos and Atreus embark on a journey to scatter the ashes of Faye, Kratos's wife and Atreus's mother. Ronald D. Moore, already the creator of Battlestar Galactica and Outlander, is screenwriter, executive producer, and showrunner, while Frederick E.O. Toye will direct the first two episodes.

Prime Video has not yet announced a release date. However, the transition from Hurst to Bautista avoids postponing the resumption of work until 2027, a scenario that emerged after the previous lead's injury.
