The Big Hit: Dungeons & Dragons: World of Warcraft

Officially opening Wizards of the Coast's new “Universes Beyond” initiative is the crossover that fans of both franchises have dreamed of for years: Dungeons & Dragons: World of Warcraft, arriving on November 17, 2026, as the centerpiece of the “Season of Champions.” The manual, developed in close collaboration with Blizzard Entertainment, brings Warcraft back to the tabletop for the first time in two decades, allowing players to recreate their main World of Warcraft character (or create a brand new one) and explore iconic zones, historic dungeons, and face legendary enemies drawn from over twenty years of the Blizzard franchise's history. The core set will also include dungeons adapted directly from the video game for D&D rules, a detail that promises to delight both Azeroth veterans and Dungeon Masters looking for ready-to-use settings.

Icecrown Citadel Map Pack: Return to the Lich King's Lair

The first major add-on announced is the Icecrown Citadel Map Pack, which allows players to relive one of Azeroth's most legendary raids directly on paper. The pack includes full-size poster maps, dedicated tokens, and an included digital adventure that guides characters from level 16 to level 20, pitting them against a dozen high-level bosses, with the Lich King at the forefront (or at least his entourage). From the frames of the teaser released by Wizards of the Coast, the icy spires of the Citadel and a d20 die that seems to 'emerge' from the ruins of what appears to be Stormwind in flames are clearly visible, suggesting that the crossover will not be limited to Northrend but will touch upon multiple chapters of the saga.

A small inconsistency between official sources should be noted: the press release indicates the manual's launch for November 17, 2026, while the simultaneously released teaser spot states “Early Access begins November 3,” implying an early access window (likely digital, on D&D Beyond) approximately two weeks before the official retail release.

Commenting on the announcement, Holly Longdale, Executive Producer and Vice President of World of Warcraft at Blizzard Entertainment, emphasized that World of Warcraft and Dungeons & Dragons share the same core philosophy: to offer players a world full of possibilities and let them write its story.

Star Wars Surprisingly Lands on D&D

While the Warcraft crossover had been rumored for some time, no one expected Darth Vader himself to close the evening, taking the stage to announce a partnership between Dungeons & Dragons and Star Wars starting in 2027. The Sith Lord, true to his style, provided no concrete details on rules, setting, or product format, leaving fans literally in the dark (or rather, on the dark side) awaiting further communications.

Dark Sun: D&D's Most Brutal Setting is Back on Track

Gen Con 2026 also marked the grand return of Dark Sun, the post-apocalyptic and mature setting that became a cult classic among historical D&D fans. In 2027, a new suite of dedicated products will arrive, designed to inaugurate the “Season of Survival”: players will have to contend with tyrannical sorcerer-kings and survive in the blood-soaked lands of Athas.

D&D Icons: Veterans Return to the Table

Among the most anticipated announcements by long-time fans is the birth of D&D Icons, a new creative program led by some of the most iconic names in role-playing game history. Joe Manganiello, actor, producer, and now Chief Creative Officer of the program, took the stage, bringing authors of the caliber of Margaret Weis, Tracy Hickman, and Luke Gygax to the table.

Among the first Icons projects revealed:

Dragonlance: Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, original creators of the setting, will return to write a new TTRPG manual dedicated to Dragonlance, the first in over 20 years, condensing four decades of lore into the most ambitious volume ever created for the setting.

Luke Gygax's project: the son of D&D co-creator, Gary Gygax, will complete an adventure based on his father's unpublished, unfinished material, available as early as 2027.

R.A. Salvatore and Drizzt Do'Urden: the celebrated author, with over twenty appearances on the New York Times bestseller list, will work under the aegis of Icons to revive the most famous Drow of the Forgotten Realms.

Death Saves by Joe Manganiello: Manganiello himself will launch a new world for the role-playing game, rooted in the dark fantasy / heavy metal aesthetic of his streetwear brand Death Saves, as an official D&D collaboration under the Icons banner.

Greyhawk: Crown of the Witch Queen

The original D&D setting, Greyhawk, returns as the protagonist with a new adventure, Greyhawk: Crown of the Witch Queen. Players will have to decide the fate of the setting in the face of the return and rise of Drelnza, vampire daughter of Iggwilv the Witch Queen, better known to fans as Tasha, as she seeks to reclaim her birthright.

Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons, the New Video Game Reveals Tasha

On the video game front, Gen Con brought a double revelation for Tasha fans: her role in the anticipated Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons has been officially confirmed, with award-winning actress Maggie Robertson lending her voice and performance capture to the character, alongside Tricia Helfer (Battlestar Galactica, Lucifer) as the protagonist Kaatri.

Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons is an original third-person single-player action-adventure, set in a dark fantasy open world inspired by D&D imagery. Developed by Invoke Studios, the game puts players in the shoes of Kaatri, a veteran warrior who makes a pact to wield otherworldly magic against dark forces, with Tasha evidently acting as an antagonist or key figure in the plot.

Surprisingly, Wizards of the Coast also confirmed that the first look at the game's gameplay will arrive on August 25, during gamescom's Opening Night Live: an event to mark on the calendar for those who want to see the game in action for the first time.

D&D Beyond Gets a Makeover: Easier to Find a Group

Wizards of the Coast has directly addressed one of the most persistent problems for those new to role-playing games: finding a table. The D&D Beyond platform is launching the new Looking For Group feature, which offers three ways to find adventure companions: an event finder for in-person events in your area, the ability to form tables with the online community through the official Discord server, or relying on professional Dungeon Masters through a new partnership with StartPlaying.

The collaboration with StartPlaying brings with it a promotion dedicated to newcomers: for a limited time, it will be possible to join a game on StartPlaying for only $0.99, a low-risk way for those who have never played D&D (or never used D&D Beyond online) to finally sit at the table.

To complete the package of digital innovations, the D&D Beyond team also unveiled a new mobile app, built from scratch on a gaming platform designed primarily for in-person sessions, intended to make the gaming experience simpler and more intuitive. The app will arrive in early 2027.

New Partnerships for Historic Settings

Wizards of the Coast also announced a new partnership program with various studios in the tabletop gaming industry, to ensure official and annual TTRPG support for the brand's most iconic settings. The first confirmed collaborations are with Ghostfire Gaming for a new chapter of Ravenloft (2027), with Visionary Productions for Eberron (2028), and with Kobold Press for the Forgotten Realms (2028). The program, Wizards promises, will expand in the years to come to cover additional settings.

Also on the Live-Play Front: New Face for Dungeon Masters

Among the accompanying news, Theo Solomon has joined the cast of the acclaimed YouTube show Dungeon Masters for Campaign 3, set in the Azeroth of Dungeons & Dragons: World of Warcraft, and for Campaign 4, an adventure set in the icy Icewind Dale that will see the actors portray their Baldur's Gate 3 characters, thus concluding the show's first season.

Summing Up...

Between unprecedented crossovers, the return of historical authors, and new video game projects, Gen Con 2026 confirms Wizards of the Coast's strategy: opening Dungeons & Dragons to new audiences through Universes Beyond, without abandoning long-time fans thanks to the Icons program and the return of settings like Dark Sun, Dragonlance, and Greyhawk. With World of Warcraft already confirmed for November and Star Wars on the horizon for 2027, the question lingering among tables worldwide is just one: what will be the next Universe Beyond to cross the threshold of the D&D multiverse?
