With the "Midnight" expansion of World of Warcraft, the 'Devourer' specialization for the Demon Hunter class has been introduced. PJ Rivas, game designer and one of the leads in Devourer's development, and Marcelian & Flame, WoW content creators, gathered to share their impressions on the new specialization.

Q: The Devourer Demon Hunter specialization introduces a fascinating new identity centered around wielding the power of the Void. Could you elaborate on the underlying lore and design philosophy behind this specialization?

PJ: «Demon Hunters' ability to absorb corrupting influences made them the most obvious choice for a Void-corrupted specialization. Our main fantasy prompt was to ask: what happens when a Demon Hunter wants more? A spell-casting oriented direction was the logical evolution after evaluating Void magic paired with the Demon Hunters' existing kit.»

Q: You've spoken with great enthusiasm about the Devourer specialization in the past. For you, personally, what was the most exciting moment during its development phase?

PJ: «It was a specialization that required numerous revisions. Initially, we had many original concepts, but they failed to convey the atmosphere we wanted. We considered the idea of a more combat-oriented Devourer, wielding bows, but it felt too far from the essence of Demon Hunters. We had a version where the Metamorphosis gameplay was entirely melee-based, but it seemed too similar to Havoc. Ultimately, the most exciting moment was when we tested the combination of Void Form-style Fury drain and Collapsing Star. The latter represented a unique way to increase the Devourer's power, and both the spell and visual effects were fantastic, even from the very early stage. It was a great satisfaction to have found such a clear direction.»

Q: Soul Fragments are central to the Devourer's rotation and resource management. How does this unique mechanic contribute to an engaging and original gameplay loop?

PJ: «The interaction between souls and fury in the Vengeance Demon Hunter adds depth to the character. When designing the Devourer, we almost immediately opted for the reaper idea. We wanted souls to become something players actively seek out and accumulate for big explosive moments. As soon as we received the new visual effects for Void Soul Fragments, we increased the speed of soul generation and consumption, and it immediately felt perfect. Consume then evolved into Soul Immolation, and we established Harvest as the primary Soul consumer.»

M&F: «The fact that soul fragments are "physical" objects that can be interacted with, combined with their visual design, gives the Devourer a fresh and innovative feel. Combat becomes more engaging. Furthermore, being able to 'set them aside' by simply not intentionally collecting them offers players flexibility and a greater sense of control over when to cash in their resources.»

Q: For those considering trying the Devourer specialization, what would you say are the most rewarding aspects?

PJ: «The Devourer was designed to offer some satisfying and rewarding gameplay loops. The shorter loop, based on soul generation and collection, creates natural peaks and valleys in both damage and adrenaline. The long loop leading to the preparation and execution of a Void Metamorphosis also has its own peaks and valleys. Casting a devastating fourth or fifth Collapsing Star during Metamorphosis is very satisfying. We wanted players to see health bars drop when they cast this magic.»

M&F: «The Devourer is easy to learn, but difficult to master. The concept is incredibly simple, but it hides a deceptive depth that requires greater skill in using game mechanics. Players need to know when and where to position themselves so that their Void Beams and Collapsing Stars do not have to be interrupted. If they make a mistake, the player is severely punished.»

Q: In Season 1 raids, players seek to optimize their damage and utility. In what role does the Devourer Demon Hunter excel in a raid context?

PJ: «Devourer Demon Hunters perform best in situations that require a high field presence, such as raids and Mythic+. Thanks to their powers, they can easily offer a range of multi-target options and should be the ideal choice when you want to quickly eliminate a group of secondary mobs.»

M&F: «The Devourer is an explosive damage specialization that excels at acting in short key moments, adapting to what the encounter requires. Its incredible mobility and ability to cast spells while moving make this specialization very versatile, capable of easily handling the challenges of any encounter.»

Q: Beyond pure damage, what key strategies or talent choices should players prioritize to truly optimize their Devourer's performance for the challenges and encounters of Midnight raids?

PJ: «The most important part of the Devourer's kit are its Hero Talents. Void-Scarred and Annihilator are designed to offer different playstyles. Annihilator focuses entirely on enhancing the Devourer's core experience, pairing explosive spells with cosmic meteors. The bonuses provided by Annihilator will help you become stronger during Void Metamorphosis and stay in it longer. The Void-Scarred build, on the other hand, aims to quickly enter and exit Metamorphosis to benefit from as many ability resets and Void Surges as possible. Void-Scarred offers a particularly high number of mobility spells and rotational dashes, and has a more "bursty" profile; therefore, it can be an interesting option when facing groups in Mythic+ dungeons.»

M&F: «The Devourer has two distinctly different playstyles, which can be easily summarized as "ranged" and "melee". The ranged build functions as a more traditional damage dealer, with a simple rotation and a well-defined rotational objective. The melee version is a more modern approach, mixing traits that make the Demon Hunter a unique class. This version involves briefly entering and exiting melee to inflict a damage spike with Voracious Stride and repositioning with Vengeful Retreat, giving the Devourer the opportunity to get back into position without sacrificing its damage output.»

Q: Currently, Demon Hunters have Havoc, a very established and beloved DPS specialization. How do you envision the Devourer complementing or distinguishing itself, both in terms of playstyle and its role in group content?

PJ: «The most obvious difference is that Havoc is a melee character, while the Devourer is a mid-range caster. Being a caster means casting spells, and although the Devourer boasts Demon Hunter mobility, it will often have to stop to cast both Void Beam and Collapsing Star. The Devourer also requires a bit more careful planning to set up its most devastating attacks. Ideally, what we offer with Havoc and with the Devourer are two unique playstyles that appeal to different people, but which remain essentially and unequivocally Demon Hunters.»

M&F: «The Havoc Demon Hunter excels at using its mobility to circumvent any mechanics. The Devourer complements it with a slightly slower and more strategic approach, while still being on par with Havoc in terms of mobility. The Devourer has fewer tools to react with the same immediacy, but in return, it rewards players more interested in optimizing their damage while also staying at a safer distance. That said, both perfectly embody their respective elements: Havoc is Fel and chaos. The Devourer is Void and possibility.»

Q: As Midnight progresses and future content is introduced, how do you think the Devourer Demon Hunter will evolve?

PJ: «We are very excited to test new solutions with more noticeable and impactful effects as the seasons progress. New sets offer us ways to explore different directions, and if people like them, we would love to make them a central part of the Devourer's kit in the future. We will keep an eye on player activity and gather their feedback to make necessary changes. In the short term, we are already giving Soul Immolation a boost with content update 12.0.5, to help start and maintain the soul engine in all content, especially outdoors and in Incursions. Our goal is to make it easier to use and improve the Devourer's sustain in content with less continuous action.»

M&F: «What strikes us is the modern combat system that introduces variety in gameplay, while keeping the specialization familiar to players. The future of the Devourer seems to pave the way for what other specializations can achieve, while continuing to evolve as a specialization in its own right.»
