What is Perfect Balance and why it matters in the post-rotation meta

Pokémon Perfect Balance is the second expansion, post-rotation, which, with its 203 cards, aims to help redefine the cornerstones and decks for the future of the card game, after an immense quantity of aids, Pokémon, and items that were no longer reprinted went out of "legality."

Quantitatively, Perfect Balance offers a higher number of cards than the average for “intermediate” expansions, but without slipping into dispersive excess. The selection of Pokémon covers all tiers of the evolutionary pyramid, with particular attention to intermediate stages, often sacrificed in more aggressive sets. This choice has a real impact on the game, as it encourages complete evolutionary lines and strategies that require planning, rather than solely acceleration and immediate power spikes. The Trainer card section is also denser and more varied than usual, with a clear balance between control tools, draw support cards, and direct interaction options with the opponent's field.

One of the most discussed and, at the same time, most interesting elements of the expansion is the increased distribution of PokéPad. The idea of making this item more accessible, both in terms of rarity and presence in products linked to the expansion, has a concrete impact on deck consistency. PokéPad is a true strategic linchpin and no longer an occasional tech, allowing for more refined management of Supporter cards and opening up more complex and readable turns. This increased availability never leads to obvious abuse, because the set also introduces several disruptive and responsive elements, creating a dynamic ecosystem where planning remains central.

Mega Starmie ex: the most complete control deck of the expansion

On the front of pre-built decks and new strategic lines, Perfect Balance stands out for its courage in proposing less obvious archetypes. The Mega Starmie deck, in particular, represents a modern interpretation of the concept of tempo control. The presence of Mega Evolution is not exploited as a simple damage multiplier, but as the fulcrum of a strategy based on Energy management, constant pressure, and tactical flexibility. The result is a deck that requires skill, that rewards knowledge of correct timing, and that is difficult to pilot automatically, a quality increasingly rare in products also designed for the general public. A deck that is therefore quite "economical," but truly powerful, which takes the scepter from a very similar one – that of Grimmsnarl ex –, but with the speed and power of Megas.

Decidueye ex, on the other hand, enters with an even more economical deck – from a monetary point of view to have it complete and competitive – seemingly complex to activate its combo with Vivillon, yet extraordinarily simple to implement, also thanks to the referee, and ferociously nasty.

These are not the only important decks; I have reported those that I enjoyed the most, but one cannot fail to mention the Mega Zygarde ex deck, although in general we await May to enjoy all the novelties of Fates Collide to bring our favorite card game to even higher levels.
