MTG Avatar: The Last Airbender, the new crossover arrives

The world of Magic: The Gathering is constantly evolving, and along the way in recent years, the world's most famous card game has crossed paths with numerous other franchises. The latest encounter in terms of timing (as it's scheduled for the coming weeks) is with the animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender. 

In recent days, we had the opportunity to attend a closed-door online presentation of the set, along with some of the talents who worked on its creation: specifically, Dillon Deveney (Worldbuilding Lead), Chris Mooney (Set Design Lead), Reggie Valk (Jumpstart Lead Design), and Ian Adams (MGT Arena Lead).

The scope of the collaboration is well summarized by the words of Dillon Deveney, who opened the presentation: "One of the reasons I love the series is the characters: they have intense narrative arcs, rich in drama and catharsis, with memorable personalities to the point of becoming sources of inspiration for generations of fans. We truly felt the weight of the responsibility to convey all of this through the game."

The set will obviously include all the key characters from the saga, starting with Aang, the protagonist, and the other Heroes who accompany him on his journey, but also Enemies, Animals, and of course Mechanics, all inspired by what is seen throughout the series. Waterbending, Firebending, Earthbending, or of course Airbending enter the MTG vocabulary through the introduction of spells that replicate the different types of attack linked to the characters and the techniques they master. However, some cards already appreciated in other sets also return, such as Saga cards, Double-Faced Saga, and many others. News that will certainly please all fans of both Magic The Gathering and Avatar: The Last Airbender, is the presence of Partner Source Material cards, each featuring a frame from a single episode of the series. 

The line-up for this MTG Avatar: The Last Airbender series will consist of Boosters, Collector Boosters, Bundles, some Pre-release kits that will be available the week before launch, but also Scene Boxers, Commander Bundles, a Beginner Box and Jumpstart Boosters. In particular, the Beginner Box, a continuation of the line introduced with Magic: Foundations which aims to teach newcomers how to play MGT through a pre-determined sequence, returns with the purpose of replicating through the cards the events of the first episode of the series, structured to simultaneously teach basic and advanced mechanics to the novice player. 

And that's not all: the collaboration will also extend to Arena: it will indeed be possible to play with the new set in the legendary digital version of MGT available on mobile, PC, and MAC through three different bundles (and the inevitable pre-order bonuses!). The most important detail comes last: every single card in the set will be available in Arena. Now, place your calendar within reach and take note of the roadmap leading to MTG Avatar: The Last Airbender: the Debut is set for October 28th (today!), in the week between October 29th and November 7th, the Previews arrive, followed by the pre-release on November 14th. For the official launch, however, you will have to wait until November 28th for Arena and November 21st for the physical sets.
