God of War Sons of Sparta Told by the Developers
A behind-the-scenes video explains how the game was made

Sony and Santa Monica Studio wanted to surprise players with the unexpected God of War Sons of Sparta, which launched last Friday immediately after its announcement, made at the culmination of the State of Play. In a new trailer shared by PlayStation's YouTube channel, the developers at Mega Cat Studios tell us about the genesis of this title, which explores the youth of protagonist Kratos and his brother Deimos.
God of War goes from 3D to 2D
Creating a God of War game in 2D means starting from the fluid action of a three-dimensional series and trying to transpose it into just two dimensions. Mega Cat accomplished this task using a special tool that takes 3D animations and converts them into 2D sprites: in other words, the studio drew directly from the animations of previous God of War games to have a basic model faithful to the original, from which artists then drew Sons of Sparta.
A combat system faithful to God of War
The combat system was designed primarily to be fun and to convey the feeling of a Kratos who hits fast and hard. As a good Spartan, our hero primarily uses a spear and shield: to these two essential factors many others are added, such as secondary weapons, elemental attributes, and so on. The enemies harken back to the tradition of God of War, including typical monsters from Greek folklore and giant bosses.

In our review of GoW Sons of Sparta, we note that it is a pleasant but far from memorable experience, suffering from a lack of identity. In our opinion, without that cumbersome name on its shoulders, it would easily go unnoticed.
