The reboot of the 1993 action cult classic directed by Renny Harlin, which almost cost Stallone an arm, will be helmed by Jaume Collet-Serra and will bring high-altitude thrills back to cinemas on August 28, 2026, a strategic date that promises to capture audiences during a less crowded period for major summer blockbusters.

The new version won't be a simple remake: Collet-Serra aims for a more intimate and realistic story, capable of blending physical tension and human drama. Described as a meeting between The Shallows and The Grey, the film will shift its setting from the Rocky Mountains to the majestic Italian Dolomites (chosen by Harlin himself for some of the original filming), with Pierce Brosnan and Lily James in the main roles.

An action peak to climb

Cliffhanger – The Jaume Collet-Serra Reboot

The plot follows Ray Cooper, an ex-climber who lives with his daughter in an alpine refuge. When a group of criminals interrupts their weekend, the young woman will be forced to survive amidst ice, rocks, and fear, in a desperate race for salvation. Produced by Row K Entertainment, the project aims to restore the physicality and sense of danger that made the original Cliffhanger with Sylvester Stallone famous, but with a modern sensibility and a different female perspective.

Between nostalgia and the desire to challenge a cult classic, this “cinematic climb” promises to bring action back to its purest peaks. The comparison will be inevitable, recalling the risks taken by the production in years when computer graphics were more science fiction than reality.
