Magic: The Gathering Meets Avatar – An Epic Crossover of Elements and Strategy

The Magic: The Gathering multiverse continues to expand with one of the most anticipated collaborations in recent years: the arrival of Avatar – The Last Airbender in the Universes Beyond line. After the success of sets dedicated to Fallout, Final Fantasy, and Spider-Man, Wizards of the Coast has decided to fuse the world of Planeswalkers with that of Elemental Masters, creating an expansion that promises to redefine the concept of contamination between narrative universes. The set, available from November 21, 2025, transports players to the Four Nations, where water, earth, fire, and air are not just narrative elements, but become actual game mechanics. The objective is clear: to recreate the balance and epic tension of the animated series through legendary cards, innovative abilities, and illustrations that capture the essence of an iconic journey.

New Features and Mechanics: Mastering the Elements

The heart of the expansion is represented by the four new keywords that embody the bending arts: Waterbend, Earthbend, Firebend, and Airbend. Each mechanic reflects the philosophy and playstyle of a nation. Waterbend introduces flexibility, allowing players to reduce activation costs by tapping creatures or artifacts, reminiscent of the historic Convoke but with greater dynamism. Earthbend transforms lands into permanent creatures, adding +1/+1 counters and ensuring resilience: if they are destroyed, they return as lands, creating a cycle of strength and stability. Firebend is pure aggression: each attack generates temporary red mana, to be spent immediately for spells or abilities, embodying the destructive and creative power of fire. Airbend, finally, plays with evasion and control, allowing players to exile permanents and replay them at a reduced cost, paving the way for strategies based on blink and tempo. Alongside these mechanics, the set reintroduces Ally type cards, double-faced sagas, and rares with elemental frames, as well as enchantments like Airbender’s Ascension and Earthbender’s Ascension, designed for advanced synergies in Commander and Modern formats. Iconic characters such as Aang, Katara, Zuko, and Toph are also present, each with abilities that reflect their journey in the series, and scenic cards that revisit key moments in the story.

The Beginner's Introductory Set: The Beginner Box

For those new to Magic, Wizards has created the Avatar-themed Beginner Box, a product designed to make learning simple and engaging. Inside the box, we find ten twenty-card Jumpstart half-decks, two of which – based on Aang and Zuko – are pre-ordered for the initial tutorial. These decks guide the player step-by-step through the first five phases of the game, with numbered cards to follow the correct sequence. The kit is completed by two playmats, two spindown dice, five double-sided tokens, and a rulebook, all enclosed in an illustrated box featuring the series' protagonists. The product's logic is simple yet ingenious: once the basics are learned, two half-decks can be shuffled together to create ever-new combinations, experimenting with synergies between different elements and mana colors. This modular approach, borrowed from the success of Jumpstart, maintains the appeal of collecting and the strategic depth typical of Magic. The accessible price and aesthetic care make it not only an excellent teaching tool but also a perfect gift for Avatar fans and for those who want to enter the world of Magic without feeling overwhelmed by the initial complexity.
