We learn from mistakes. We grow and improve from mistakes, as they are what allow us to lay the foundations for success. We could continue along this line to praise and explain the triumphant return of Battlefield 6, but it would probably still be an understatement to describe the reappearance of such an acclaimed, longed-for, and anticipated title. Here's the review of Battlefield 6!

Battlefield's Return After the Misstep of 2042

Four years have passed since the misstep called Battlefield 2042. A misguided title that left a bitter taste and erased all the good that had been done by both Battlefield 5, but especially Battlefield 1. The collective led by team DICE has learned from and fully utilized its absence from the market in recent years, delivering a game that puts the player back at the center of the war world, in a style that only those who know what the Battlefield saga is capable of can appreciate.

The Battlefield 6 Single Player Campaign

Let's begin by dissecting the game from its single-player component, namely the campaign of the new Battlefield 6. After the episodic structure that characterized Battlefield 1 and 5, we return first and foremost to a single story, which will take us to epic battles across 3 continents. Without spoiling anything, we can at least tell you that you will see some truly spectacular things, in a dynamic and varied environment, you will go from the Egyptian pyramids to the streets of Brooklyn.

Battlefield 6 Plot: A World on the Brink of Chaos and Power

The world is no longer divided into East and West. It is divided between those who have an army… and those who are at its mercy.” It is from this incipit that we begin to describe the plot of the Battlefield 6 campaign. In 2027, the world is on the brink of geopolitical collapse. NATO has crumbled, the United States is worn down by internal conflicts, and trust in the global order has shattered. Into the void left by chaos steps Pax Armata, a private military company with unlimited resources, soldiers without a flag, and an undeclared mission: to seize control of strategic regions of the planet, imposing its own “vision.” In the heart of this crisis, you enter the fray as a member of Dagger 1-3, a clandestine Marine Raiders task force. You are part of a small but lethal group, sent where diplomacy has failed. Your mission: to stop the advance of Pax Armata and discover who is funding them... and why.

Battlefield 6, the review

The Protagonists and Dagger 1-3 Squad in Battlefield 6

Our heroes will be 5 highly trained soldiers, each with specific combat roles and well-defined positions:

  • Haz Carter – Assault
  • Dylan Murphy – Engineer
  • Simone “Gecko” Espina – Recon
  • Cliff Lopez – Support
  • Lucas Hemlock - CIA

The main antagonists are, as already specified above, Pax Armata, a private military company that gathers mercenaries from all over the world and aims to reshape global balances by taking advantage of the power vacuum created by the destruction of international institutions. It does not act for country or ideals, but for power, money, and influence.

Battlefield 6, Gameplay and Combat System

Teamwork, as per pure Battlefield tradition, becomes the key to success in completing the varied missions we will face. We will have the concrete possibility to command a true task force capable of attacking enemy forces, keeping them occupied to outflank or neutralize them, or attacking them from a distance to minimize damage. Despite the level of adrenaline, environmental characterization, and graphics, we must still say that the AI proved to be a bit lacking, not only that of the enemies but also that of our allies, who perform their duties without any excitement, in an overly cold manner. Fortunately, this doesn't bother us too much, given that even in the campaign we will be catapulted into the center of a truly complicated and intricate world, where dead moments will be few and the action completely absorbs the player's attention.

Weapons, Vehicles, and Environmental Destruction

The vehicles deployed are truly numerous, including amphibious vehicles, military ships, tanks, and war helicopters, Battlefield 6 spares nothing! What impressed us is precisely the return to extreme realism (always a hallmark of the Battlefield series), where the Frostbite Engine flexes its muscles: dust, debris, but above all environmental destruction. Everything and more to ensure the player has total immersion within the video game. It is quite incredible how probably the entire game is based on one concept: war. Stop. To make this happen, the menu has been simplified, not only in structure but also in practice. Our alter ego will always know where to put their hands in the right place.

This is thanks to a significantly streamlined shooting system, where speed is paramount, primarily to be super reactive in moments of greater excitement. Furthermore, the objective is absolutely to enjoy the cinematic actions we will perform in the moment. A considerable arsenal will help us in all of this; here too, Battlefield 6 does not hold back, but showcases varied weapons of significant repertoire. Between assault rifles, submachine guns, snipers, carbines, and much more, we will often be spoiled for choice. Obviously, during the various missions, we will start with a specific weapon, for example, in a mission segment where we impersonate Simone “Gecko” Espina, we will use the sniper rifle, but as a secondary weapon, we can vary and choose a certain type of approach over another.

It is clear that using a sniper will be a battle based on long-range kills, but apart from these few exceptions, we will truly have the opportunity to wield various types of rifles and war weapons, gradually gaining familiarity and confidence not only with lethal weapons but also with those that will characterize our playstyle, making it personal. The branching landscapes and new environments also increase the spectacle.

Battlefield 6 - Technical Department and Performance

Let's add something not to be taken for granted: our PS5 showed no hesitation, even during the most adrenaline-pumping phases, a sign of the meticulous work done by the joint teams of Battlefield Studios led by DICE.

A Cinematic and Intense Campaign

If usually in FPS games the campaign is increasingly overlooked, well, this one in Battlefield 6 will make you change your mind due to the fun and the quality of the work behind it. All this is because this war, or rather this vision of war in Battlefield 6, takes on connotations of a true film, in particular, it reminds me a lot of Sicario, an exceptional film with Emily Blunt and Benicio Del Toro. If you don't know it, watch it to truly understand the level achieved in this single-player campaign; you won't be disappointed, because Battlefield 6's campaign has moments of strong emotional intensity. Some levels will confront you with implicit moral choices, others will give you the illusion of control while everything around you crumbles. It's not the classic “heroes vs. villains” story. It's a descent into the dark depths of modern warfare.

How long is the Battlefield 6 campaign?

We conclude the campaign analysis by stating that it comprises 9 missions in total, for a longevity of 5-6 hours, clearly depending on the difficulty level you play it at. So, we look forward to the definitive review of Battlefield 6, where we will delve into the multiplayer component and be able to definitively sum up the game. The premises, given the single-player experience, are absolutely positive and promising!

Multiplayer: The Wow Factor of Battlefield 6

We have finally arrived at the main course, the main dish of any self-respecting FPS, which is the multiplayer component. Well, we can say that here too the new Battlefield 6 shows its claws, showcasing all the good, and even more, than what it had only partially shown us with the single-player campaign.

From the very first multiplayer match, we literally said “wow”! It's practically impossible not to notice from the outset that what we are witnessing firsthand is a game totally different from any other shooter. As we have already said, Battlefield has always been a game that has based its creed on realism, and here we can say that we have reached a new point in the conception of war, a new milestone in the history of video games. Yes, because from this point of view, Battlefield not only annihilates the competition but surpasses it. Soldiers are not supermen, they are not endowed with hypersonic speed, they do not resist all types of bullets, and they are not able to recover extremely quickly from a wound from any firearm.

Battlefield 6, the review

They are human beings, with all that entails! The speed of our alter ego is measured; we are not Usain Bolt. Bullets hurt us a lot; we are not Terminators. Life regeneration is slow, calibrated in small portions, where we literally feel every breath of life returning to fill our HP bar. From this point of view, the work has been nothing short of excellent in every aspect. While its direct competitor Call of Duty practically goes in the opposite direction, Battlefield 6 keeps us firmly grounded, reminding us that war is something frighteningly real, and it's much more than playing Rambo with just a headband and a machine gun blazing. Our moves will have to be much more calibrated, more thoughtful, more tactical. After all, this is war. If you actually think you can run into open ground and in the blink of an eye invade the enemy position, clearing it out, well, we can tell you that you've got the wrong game. Like it or not, the pace is more measured, more composed, more deliberate.

This is especially noticeable in medium-to-large maps; the action is sustained but never reckless. Everything around us is annihilated (clearly thanks to the famous environmental destruction already mentioned in the campaign), but it's a “controlled” chaos splendidly managed by the Frostbite Engine. We will see the world crumble around us amidst missiles, grenades, and detonations, but all of this becomes pure immersion, pure enjoyment, because never has a war front been so rich and varied as in this Battlefield 6! Tanks, drones, covering our allies while simultaneously being alert for approaching enemies. We will have to eventually heal our comrades, literally dragging them to a more sheltered position to avoid being exposed to enemy fire. We will have to crawl through dust and debris, through the ruins of a worn-out and demolished world. We will have to save our own skin, because that is always the goal of a true soldier: to return home alive.

What we further appreciated is the already large availability of maps at launch, a unique feature considering that games are increasingly launched in an “unfinished” version; in this sense too, Battlefield 6 goes against the trend. 9 maps are already available, and 3 more will arrive. The maps are well-defined, varied, and designed to be ready for the war scenario. What will strike us after seeing all the maps is certainly an overwhelming dominance of anthropic maps compared to natural ones, but even in this case, the choice is wise, as we will soon have to identify the crucial points of each location, to take possession of them and exploit their environmental characteristics. The return to historical classes has benefited DICE's new game; honestly, we missed them.

Battlefield 6, the review

Assault, Engineer, Support, and Recon have always been cornerstones of the franchise, a welcome return to origins, but modernized and characterized in some dynamics. Each class, for example, will have the possibility to equip the weapon that suits us best, the one we are most confident with, or simply the best for our needs. What characterizes the classes is the possibility of equipping only certain gadgets, peculiar to each different class. The arsenal is another determining factor in Battlefield 6. As we had already seen in the campaign, the firearms are numerous and varied, with remarkable realism, not only for recoil and weapon movement but also for the sound that emanates from them. This latter point is another precious gem that Battlefield 6 guards and preserves.

With high-quality headphones, the sound seemed clear to us, never uncertain, contributing decisively to that total immersion that Battlefield so craves. Hearing a bullet whistle near our helmet and actually seeing bullets plummeting towards us a fraction of a second later is priceless, elevating the masterful work edited by the DICE team and associates to superlative levels. Enemy footsteps become obvious and detectable without uncertainty. After all, this too is tactics and strategy; if we were to run like elephants, our opponents would not have too much difficulty guessing our intentions. Moving discreetly becomes imperative, especially in enclosed spaces, where taking high ground can even make a difference not only for the outcome of our K/D ratio but also for the fate of the battle.

We also mention the particular Portal mode, a true editor procedure, in which we can create personalized multiplayer experiences, such as modifying existing maps, changing or removing objects, creating custom rules (adding bots, gravity, or health regeneration). At the end of our triptych, we obviously feel compelled to offer an honest critique of the game. If we were to find a tangible flaw in this Battlefield 6, we could easily find it in the game's age-old menu, which has been unintuitive and overly complicated for a long time, not only in understanding what we have unlocked and how to use it, but also in modifying keys and choosing the commands and settings we are simply used to in FPS games, which becomes anything but a simple task. Dear Battlefield, to err is human, but to persevere is diabolical.

Battlefield 6, the review

Satisfying graphics, exceptional sound, but above all, astonishing realism and total immersion. These are the strengths of Battlefield 6! Although the campaign falls short in several aspects (lack of personality in the protagonists, even an absence of motion capture on our heroes' faces, and especially a truly lacking AI, not only for enemies but also allies), and it is precisely the campaign, along with the menu, that prevents the game from achieving perfection, the multiplayer component is undoubtedly the highlight of this new installment in the series. Team DICE has learned from its 4-year absence from the FPS scene and has returned in grand style, creating a game poised to become the progenitor of a bright future! Finally, Battlefield 1 has found its worthy successor!
