Parasite Mutant: The Announcement of the New Survival Horror
A tribute to a great classic from the late '90s
In 1998, Square Enix created Parasite Eve, a survival horror with RPG mechanics that is now considered a cult classic. In 2000, the sequel arrived, and then the franchise's trail went cold: the only other installment was The 3rd Birthday, a spinoff from 2010, too little for fans of the saga. It's no surprise then that there are Parasite Eve enthusiasts in the indie scene willing to pick up its legacy.
One of these enthusiasts is Sukeban Games, from whom we eagerly await news about .45 Parabellum Bloodhound. Another is the Chinese studio IceSitruuna, which has just announced Parasite Mutant. The protagonist of this game is psionic agent Nova, who is sent on a mission to a city on a remote island, where she will be greeted by abominable mutants. Nova must uncover the secrets behind the horrific events.
Features of Parasite Mutant
Parasite Mutant, beyond the obvious reference in its name to Parasite Eve, draws inspiration from late '90s / early 2000s Japanese RPGs in several aspects. The combat system is called ATC (Active Time Chains): it's an evolution of the Active Time Battle from the late '90s, to which an additional three-segment chain mechanic has been added, allowing for multiple attacks. Furthermore, among the visual options, we find a retro filter and a CRT filter.
When and Where Parasite Mutant Will Be Released
Do you feel the need for a new Parasite Eve, but in the absence of news from Square Enix, an indie tribute might suffice? Then know that Parasite Mutant will be released during 2026. The designated platforms are PlayStation 5 and PC, via Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG.
