Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Cost Less Than 10 Million
A tiny budget for what could become Game of the Year

In an era where video game development costs (and everything else) are skyrocketing, it's quite striking to hear about a title that achieves great success and showcases significant production values despite starting with a shoestring budget. The low costs incurred by the Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 team have been discussed for some time, and we ourselves reported on it months ago, but now a figure even lower than expected has emerged.
Clair Obscur: Mini Budget, Maxi Result
An interview by the New York Times with members of Sandfall Interactive reveals just how small the budget was. Imagine, to create Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, the studio had less than 10 million dollars at its disposal! This incredible result was achieved by a team of approximately 30 members, who outsourced combat animations to a Korean studio and contracted out other activities, such as marketing and localization.
Clair Obscur Said No to Open World
To keep costs down, Sandfall Interactive used various expedients, primarily not chasing the open-world trend. The game's locations are essentially wide corridors with beautiful rendered scenery, and the overworld map is a miniature version of the explorable world, giving players the impression of having access to vast spaces without having to create all the details.
