Scream is a famous slasher media franchise created in 1996 by Wes Craven. The films' plot centers on a bloodthirsty serial killer who, wearing a Halloween mask, tries to kill Sidney Prescott and the people in her life. Let's immediately discover this iconic film series that, in the nineties, relaunched slasher genre films.

All Scream Films

A homicidal maniac, with a terrifying white mask, hunts a group of people and unleashes chaos. Six films that tell the story of some people, including Sidney Prescott, who try to survive.

Scream (1997)

In 1996 (in the USA) and 1997 (Italy), the world of slasher films was completely revolutionized by the arrival of Scream, the first chapter. The film, which was a great success, was directed by Wes Craven, an undisputed master of horror. Scream quickly became a cult, influencing other cinematic and television products (including numerous teenager-horror movies). Wes Craven managed to combine horror with elements typical of satire, comedy, and whodunit mystery.

What is the plot? Some brutal and mysterious murders disrupt a town. Behind this terrible trail of blood could be a person wearing a white mask. The protagonist is Sidney Prescott (played by Neve Campbell), a girl who tries to survive and overcome the threats and murders around her.

Scream is partly inspired by the story of Danny Rolling (the Gainesville Ripper), an American serial killer arrested in 1991.

Scream 2 (1998)

In 1997/1998, the anticipated sequel arrived (here you can find the review), also directed by Craven. With this chapter, the filmmaker also delivered a satire dedicated to sequels and their clichés. An copycat killer, in the guise of Ghostface, targets Sidney Prescott and other Woodsboro survivors.

Scream 3 (2000)

Originally created to close the saga (which, however, returned in 2011 with a fourth film), Scream 3, released in 2000, is a film that “satirizes” the clichés of cinematic trilogies. Sidney Prescott, after surviving, moves to Northern California. The tranquility doesn't last long: gruesome murders occur on the set of the film that tells the story of the Woodsboro killings.

11 years after the conclusion of the trilogy, Scream 4 arrived in cinemas, a film with a convincing screenplay and many plot twists. Viewers are transported into a tunnel of doubts and uncertainties: every character is suspected of being the serial killer, until they too become a victim.

Sidney Prescott returns to Woodsboro again. Meanwhile, the woman has written numerous self-help books. The protagonist meets some old acquaintances, including Sheriff Linus Riley (David Arquette) and journalist Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox). Horror seems to have returned to town: brutal murders begin again. The cell phone from which the serial killer's calls originated is found inside Sidney's car.

Scream 4 is Wes Craven's last directorial work: the filmmaker died in 2015 in Los Angeles.
