The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon 3 - History Unfortunately Repeats Itself
Julian is yet another well-constructed character eliminated too soon

The third season of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon was among the most anticipated by fans, especially for the reunion between Daryl (Norman Reedus) and Carol (Melissa McBride). The debut indeed delivers intense moments between the two, finally alone on screen as they cross the Eurotunnel and arrive in a post-apocalyptic London, enveloped by vegetation and an unsettling silence.
But the enthusiasm quickly fades with the introduction – and immediate elimination – of a new character: Julian, played by Stephen Merchant. A solitary survivor in the British capital, with his irony and vulnerability, he brings freshness and humanity in just a few minutes. His story, marked by loss and resilience, immediately makes him memorable.
Why repeat the same mistakes of the past?
Yet the series decides to sacrifice him almost immediately: during a crossing to America, Julian is injured in a storm and dies, with a hasty burial at sea that also buries the emotional impact. A wasted opportunity, which repeats a known error of the saga: introducing characters with significant potential only to use them as mere narrative tools and abandon them too soon.
The comparison with The Ones Who Live is inevitable, where entire groups were eliminated without development. The Walking Dead has always shone thanks to its strong supporting characters – Glenn, Hershel, Negan – capable of enriching the plot. With Merchant, the series could have built a unique and dynamic trio alongside Daryl and Carol, instead London immediately loses its voice.
