Set in 1970s Brazil, The Secret Agent transforms the story of a man forced to change his name and live in the shadows into a narrative about the fragility of collective memory. Kleber Mendonça Filho almost always avoids spectacularizing repression and prefers to build a climate of constant unease, where every encounter can hide a betrayal and every gesture seems observed by someone.

The film's strength lies primarily in Wagner Moura's performance, capable of making palpable the tension of a protagonist who carries guilt, remorse, and losses without ever succumbing to overemphasis. The narrative proceeds through reconstructions and fragments of the past, slowly composing a mosaic that invites the viewer to actively participate instead of providing immediate answers.

The Weight of the Past Between Escape and Identity

Visually, the reconstruction of the era and the cinematography contribute to creating a suspended atmosphere, while the sound and off-screen spaces fuel the sensation of an invisible yet ever-present threat. Some passages are more didactic in emphasizing the political discourse, yet the work maintains a convincing balance between thriller and historical reflection.

More than a simple story of persecution, The Secret Agent is a meditation on the human cost of oblivion and the necessity of preserving memory when power tries to erase it. Here is Maurizio Encari's artistic review.

The Secret Agent 4K - Memory as the Last Refuge

Shot analog at variable resolution from 3.4K and 4.6K and 4K finalization of the master used for the creation of this excellent UHD edition. Image format 2.39:1 (3840 x 2160/24 fps), HEVC encoding on BD-100 triple layer. With such a solid starting point, the viewing offers a spectacle of remarkable quality, for the prominence of details even in the background, color richness, depth of blacks, and sense of three-dimensionality. The management of light dynamics by virtue of HDR-10 completes the picture.

A complete offering also for audio, with Italian and Portuguese DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 (always 16 bit) and dual Dolby Digital 2.0 (224 kbps) which aims to further favor more compressed listening through TV speakers. The two lossless tracks are rich in dynamics, but the original also has the strength of direct sound and dialogues that further take center stage. Soundtrack accompanied by music, ambient street noises, subwoofer depth even when a car engine starts.

The included BD-50 with the 2K version also offers the trailer and the film Retratos Fantasmas. Presented in the Special Screenings section at the Cannes 2023 Festival, it unfolds as a personal journey into memory by Kleber Mendonça Filho. Through the story of his Recife and the places that marked his growth, the director intertwines private memories, urban history, and a passion for cinema, giving life to a work that transcends the boundaries of traditional documentary to take the form of an intimate autobiographical film-essay. In Portuguese with subtitles.
