Capcom modified the script for the new Street Fighter, eliminating a scene in which Chun-Li, played by Callina Liang, would have had to cut off a finger to prove her loyalty to M. Bison. In the final version, the mutilation was replaced by a brand impressed on the palm of her hand.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Liang explained that the sequence is part of the fighter's revenge mission, infiltrating the criminal organization Shadaloo to uncover the truth about her father's death. Bison, played by David Dastmalchian, subjects her to a test that would have had permanent consequences.

A choice also made for the future

The decision to forgo mutilation avoids tying any potential sequels to an irreversible physical change. A similar problem arose in John Wick 3 – Parabellum, when the protagonist loses a finger, a lesion that had to be maintained in subsequent chapters.

The branding scene, however, required particular commitment from Liang. Director Kitao Sakurai asked her to gradually intensify her reaction to the pain, without resorting to real physical stimuli during filming. To prepare for the role, the actress followed an intense athletic program and a diet that included up to twelve eggs a day, primarily developing her leg muscles, which are fundamental for reproducing the character's fighting style.

The interview also revealed a scene that was later removed: during a confrontation with Ken Masters, played by Noah Centineo, Callina Liang actually hit him during filming. Liang finally expressed interest in a possible sequel that would delve deeper into the confrontation with Bison, but no new film has been announced yet.
