The historic rivalry between Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat is once again expanding beyond the world of video games. In 2026, the two sagas will return to clash on the big screen with new cinematic productions, reigniting a competition that has lasted for over thirty years.

The first to hit the big screen will be Mortal Kombat II, a sequel to the 2021 film, scheduled for release in Italian cinemas on May 6, 2026. A few months later, it will be the turn of the Street Fighter reboot, expected on October 16, 2026. The temporal coincidence has already fueled the comparison between fans of the opposing franchises.

Will they hit hard in theaters too?

Some members of the respective casts have made the box office challenge even more intense. During a public event, Andrew Schulz, who plays Dan Hibiki in the new Street Fighter, joked about the absence of the Mortal Kombat team at the Game Awards ceremony. The remark quickly reached Lewis Tan, who stars as Cole Young, and he responded with an ironic but firm tone in a subsequent interview.

Despite the exchange of barbs, Tan still emphasized the mutual respect among many actors involved in the two projects, also recalling the presence in the Street Fighter cast of several martial artists and colleagues with whom he has worked in the past.

Both films feature very rich ensembles. Mortal Kombat II will star Karl Urban, Adeline Rudolph, and Jessica McNamee, while the Street Fighter reboot will feature names like Jason Momoa, Noah Centineo, Roman Reigns, and Andrew Koji.

With two such close releases, 2026 could become the year of the great cinematic clash between the two fighting game icons.
