Sleepy Hollow, Sydney Sweeney to be the new Katrina

Sydney Sweeney will be Katrina Van Tassel in Hollow, a film adaptation of Lindsey Anderson Beer's novel, set to be released in fall 2027. The actress will play the character that Christina Ricci brought to the screen in Tim Burton's 1999 film, but this time she will be at the center of the narrative. Sony Pictures has acquired the rights to the book, a reinterpretation of Washington Irving's famous story by the director of Pet Sematary: Bloodlines.

The romantic triangle with Ichabod Crane and Brom Bones will remain part of the story, but it will no longer be the only element around which events revolve. The story will be told through Katrina's eyes, as she becomes involved in a supernatural affair that delves into the secrets of Sleepy Hollow and the relationships among its inhabitants.

Katrina at the Center of a Gothic Mystery

This change also distinguishes Hollow from Burton's famous version, in which Johnny Depp played an investigator grappling with a series of murders and the mystery of the Headless Horseman. In the new interpretation, Katrina will therefore not be a mere romantic presence in Ichabod's life. Her point of view will allow the events to be approached from a different perspective, making room for a protagonist who will have to confront the community's shadows directly.

Sweeney will thus find herself inheriting a recognizable cinematic legacy, without necessarily having to follow in Depp's footsteps. The project retains the main references of the legend but chooses to reorganize them around a character who has remained on the sidelines of previous adaptations until now. Obviously, the comparison with the 1999 film will be inevitable. It remains to be seen how much of Burton's gothic imagery Hollow will retain and how much it will develop its own identity, making Katrina the key to a Sleepy Hollow still full of mysteries.
