Scorsese between horror, mystery... and DiCaprio again
In a snowy European town, an encounter with strange characters as reality blurs
A new project for Martin Scorsese, who is preparing to explore territories suspended between psychological unease and dreamlike suggestions with What Happens at Night. The cast features Mads Mikkelsen and Jared Harris, alongside Jennifer Lawrence, Patricia Clarkson and the omnipresent Leonardo DiCaprio.
The screenplay is penned by Patrick Marber and adapts the eponymous 2020 novel by Peter Cameron. The story follows an American couple who travel to a remote, snow-covered European village, intending to adopt a child. Their arrival at an almost deserted hotel, populated by ambiguous and disturbing figures, soon transforms the trip into a destabilizing experience, amidst wavering identities and elusive truths.
Between the isolation of The Shining and the estrangement of Twin Peaks
The film is a collaboration between Apple Studios and Studiocanal, with production also entrusted to Sikelia Productions. For Scorsese and DiCaprio, this marks their seventh(!) feature film together after works such as Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Departed, Shutter Island, The Wolf of Wall Street and Killers of the Flower Moon.
A project that promises to combine psychological tension and introspection, once again pushing the director towards unexpected narrative territories.
