Pillars of Eternity Enriched with Turn-Based Mode
The new combat system variation available starting tomorrow, in beta
Pillars of Eternity is a role-playing game developed in 2015 by Obsidian Entertainment. This title features a real-time combat system, with the convenient option to pause and issue orders to party members. In its sequel, Deadfire, Obsidian experimented with a turn-based combat system, which it now intends to introduce into the first installment as an optional alternative.
The Turn-Based Combat System
In this new combat mode, turns will not have a rigid cadence but will be influenced by character speed, ensuring that the statistics and mechanics already employed in the real-time combat system do not lose their value. Certain actions, such as changing weapons or drinking a potion, can be performed freely, although only one of each type can be done per turn for balancing reasons.
The battles in the first Pillars of Eternity were designed for real-time, with many characters on screen: when transitioning to turns, there's a risk they could become too slow. Obsidian has decided to increase the lethality of encounters to address this issue. As mentioned above, turns are entirely optional: players can choose to stick with real-time combat or switch between systems whenever they wish.
The turn-based combat system will be introduced starting tomorrow, November 5th, on PC (Steam and Xbox PC) in beta version. For more details, consult the official website. If you want to know our opinion on the game, the Pillars of Eternity review is for you.
