James Cameron has confirmed that his next big project, besides Avatar, will be a new incarnation of Terminator. The news comes with a sharp turn that is sure to spark debate: Arnold Schwarzenegger will not return to the saga.

In a recent interview, the director explained that this will be the first time he tackles Terminator without the iconic face of the T-800. According to Cameron, Terminator: Dark Fate (2019) represented an adequate conclusion for the character played by Schwarzenegger, and now it's time to turn the page. The goal is to introduce a new generation of characters and expand the very concept of Terminator, focusing on the war in time and the evolution of super artificial intelligences.

Archiving the Past and Looking to the Future

Cameron emphasized that the real challenge today is to stay "ahead of reality", in a world where artificial intelligence, technological control, and corporate power are no longer science fiction, but everyday life. Looking to the past, he clarified, does not interest him: creating from a comfort zone is no longer an option.

The return to Terminator will happen after the release of Avatar: Fire and Ash, expected in December, while the future of the Pandora saga remains open, with Cameron intending to reduce his direct long-term involvement (it was about time). After years of unconvincing sequels, the Terminator saga seems ready to truly reinvent itself: without Schwarzenegger but with Cameron back at the helm, who evidently has made it a matter of principle.
