Netflix has acquired worldwide rights to Jack of Spades, a film directed by Joel Coen and co-written with his brother Ethan. Its theatrical release is scheduled for autumn 2027, before its arrival on the platform. This project is particularly interesting because it brings the filmmakers back to working on the same story, this time through a narrative with gothic atmospheres set in the Scottish Highlands.

The script draws inspiration from The Alien: A Story of Middle Age, a novel published in 1901 by Frances Frederica Montrésor. At the center of the story is Esther Mordaunt, a woman whose existence is turned upside down by her encounter with Jasper, a mysterious traveler with a difficult-to-decipher past. The situation escalates when an elderly woman recognizes the man as her son who died thirty years earlier, also claiming for him the right to a family property. From that moment, identity and personal ties become the core of an intrigue in which no one seems to know the whole truth.

Josh O'Connor and Patsy Ferran in a Gothic-tinged Mystery

The cast reunites Josh O'Connor and Patsy Ferran in the main roles, supported by Damian Lewis and Lesley Manville, although character details have not yet been disclosed. The literary reference deserves clarification: The Alien has nothing to do with extraterrestrials. The term indicates a stranger, someone perceived as an outsider to the community.

The theatrical distribution in autumn 2027 will precede its arrival on Netflix. For Joel and Ethan Coen, this is a particularly anticipated return to shared writing, with a story that seems to leave ample room for psychological mystery and moral ambiguities.
