28 years after the release of the film remembered by more than one generation, I Know What You Did has returned to the big screen with a requel that reignites the legend of the Southport killer fisherman. The new version revives the myth of the murderer with a variation on the theme: instead of a car full of young people hitting the unfortunate victim, it's a vehicle that skids and plunges down a sheer cliff with the driver on board.

Aware of bringing a pop icon back into play, the script tells what happens to the five friends who witness the fatal car accident caused by the idiocy of one of them, choosing by common agreement to keep the truth silent. Twelve months later, their lives are turned upside down by threatening messages and a trail of corpses. In an attempt to save themselves, they discover that their nightmare mirrors exactly what happened in 1997, asking for help from one of the survivors of the previous massacre.

Nostalgia, you scoundrel

While not able to rely on the pen of Kevin Williamson, the film tries to recapture the spirit of the '90s through a mix of black humor, plot twists, and deliberately over-the-top characters. The young cast — led by a lively Madelyn Cline — manages at least in part to breathe new life into a slasher imaginary that isn't afraid to laugh at its own clichés, while the direction focuses on a fast pace, functional atmospheres, and a declaredly nostalgic use of jump scares and soundtrack.

Despite narrative contrivances, the connection to the past risks generating confusion, especially for those who don't remember the 1997 work. Those who experienced the three films will find all the almost stale typicality of a slasher with few thrills and few pretensions, with a double final twist and a closing-opening towards a new chapter. Here is Elisa Giudici's full review.

Centralized production favored the original language offered with the same encoding + Dolby TrueHD 7.1.4 with ATMOS objects, the only 24-bit that opens up a more immersive soundscape and some effective vertical elements.
