Hunt for Gollum, the Shire reappears from the set
The film is set in the years between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring
Andy Serkis has revealed the first images from the set of The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, currently in production in New Zealand. Among the photographs is the Shire, recognizable by its setting that recalls Peter Jackson's trilogy.
Serkis, who directs the film and returns to play Gollum, accompanied the material with Howard Shore's notes from The Return of the King. A direct reference to the previous films, as production begins to show the look of the new adventure.
A story nestled within the trilogy
The film is set in the years between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring, following Gandalf's quest for Gollum, entrusted to Aragorn. The story will extend to the period when the original trilogy begins, thus allowing for connections to familiar characters and events.
The cast, in addition to Serkis, includes Ian McKellen, reprising his role as Gandalf, Jamie Dornan as Aragorn, and Elijah Wood as Frodo. Kate Winslet, Lee Pace, and Anya Taylor-Joy are also featured.
Production is underway, and Warner Bros. has set the release date for December 17, 2027. The first images do not yet reveal the plot, but they show how much the new film intends to maintain a visual connection with the Middle-earth already known to the audience.
