Disney+ has decided to stop once again, and this time the victim is a project that aimed straight for the heart of nostalgia. The platform has canceled the series inspired by Holes, Louis Sachar's cult novel and an iconic film of the early 2000s, despite the pilot episode already having been shot.

The decision is significant because it wasn't an embryonic idea: behind it were solid names and a clear vision. The screenplay was penned by Alina Mankin, the showrunner was Liz Phang, and the pilot's direction bore the signature of Jac Schaeffer, a key figure in Marvel's Disney series. Yet everything stopped before the final green light.

This new version would have distanced itself from both the book and the 2003 film, opting for a radical reinterpretation. Compared to the past, the new story features a group of girls, led by protagonist Hayley, played by Shay Rudolph, forced to dig holes in a female detention camp. The cast also included Greg Kinnear and Aidy Bryant in the roles of the adults responsible for the camp.

The idea was to re-examine the themes of adolescence, punishment, and power with a contemporary perspective, without limiting itself to a simple remake. A creative risk that, however, did not overcome Disney's current strategies, which are increasingly focused on reducing costs and concentrating efforts on secure franchises. The result is yet another project "buried" before it could be born. It remains to be seen if this attempt will remain just a footnote in the history of streaming.
