Screaming Mad George died on February 10, 2026, at 69 years old from cardiac arrest. The news was made public by his family only on August 16, 2026, after a period of privacy chosen to mourn away from public attention.

Born in Osaka in 1956 as Joji Tani, George moved to the United States at 18 to study art. Before entering cinema, he was a punk musician with The Mad, then began experimenting independently with makeup and special effects, until he met Rick Baker, who helped direct his career toward Hollywood.

Flesh as the Material of Nightmare

His name is linked to titles such as Predator, Big Trouble in Little China, Poltergeist II, The Guyver, and Nightmare 3, but it is especially Brian Yuzna's Society that cemented his work in horror history. The famous “shunting” sequence transformed bodies into a deformable and almost surreal material, becoming one of the pinnacles of practical effects of the era.

George preferred to call himself a surrealist. His research looked to Salvador Dalí and Hieronymus Bosch more than to simple horror imagery. Over the years, he was also an important point of reference for new special effects artists, first in the United States and then in Japan, where he returned to teach. He is survived by his wife Miki and daughter Alice.
