Xbox's Developer_Direct shared a flood of gameplay information about the highly anticipated Fable, a reboot of the action/RPG series created by Lionhead Studios. The heavy legacy of Peter Molyneux has been taken up by Playground Games, a studio with no prior experience in this genre of video game, but the developers' words convey a strong desire to do justice to the original.

The World of Fable

As is customary for the saga, Fable's journey begins with the protagonist at a young age, specifically in a charming village called Briar Hill. This bucolic location will, however, be struck by tragedy, and many of its inhabitants will be turned to stone. Thus begin adventures that will lead the protagonist to explore the lands of Albion, which contain a great quantity of evocative fantasy locations.

Fable will offer players an open world, traversable with great freedom from the initial stages. A recurring stop on the journey will be Bowerstone, the capital of Albion, an expansive city that hosts all kinds of humanity. In particular, in Bowerstone, we will find the Heroes' Guild: these individuals stand out among all the inhabitants of Albion not only for strength or morality but especially for their ability to use magic.

A Customized Hero and Combat

So far, we've spoken of a female protagonist because in previous Fable trailers, the female option has always been presented as the standard, but it is precisely a choice. Players will be able to customize their virtual alter ego in terms of gender and appearance, in addition to, of course, deciding their abilities or combat style.

Regarding the combat system: Fable's will still be based on the classic trilogy of fundamental attributes: strength, skill, and will. On the battlefield, both melee weapons and magic will be used, combining their attacks. Naturally, players can choose which weapons and spells to employ. There will be a vast list of enemies to face, including both old acquaintances from the series and new monsters (for example, a cockatrice is shown).

Fable Isn't Just Combat

But what kind of Fable would it be if the experience were reduced to combat? One of the strengths of Lionhead's games was the quantity and assortment of side activities. The new Fable will be no different: do you want to buy a house? You can. Do you want to buy multiple houses? You can do that too. Do you want to buy every single house in Albion? Playground hints that we might even be able to go that far…

If real estate isn't your thing, you can direct your attention to commercial activities. Finding a job, taking over a business, becoming disgustingly rich… Nothing will be precluded. There will also be the possibility of forming romantic relationships with NPCs: we emphasize "relationships" in the plural, because Fable allows for polygamy, complete with children from various partners.

Fable's Lifelike NPCs

But all these activities wouldn't be enjoyable if there wasn't a cast of supporting characters around the player. Playground seems proud of its vivid NPCs, which it calls "living population": more than a thousand characters characterized by their own personality and with a defined daily routine. With them, complex interactions can be carried out, and fully voiced conversations can be had.

Fable's Morality

In the Fable series, moral choices have always been a cornerstone, and this will also be true in the new chapter. However, there will not be a Manichaean distinction of what is right or wrong, but many gray areas, characterized by a high degree of subjectivity. In other words, players will be left free to choose for themselves the correct path for their hero, without the game judging.

Perhaps Fable itself will never judge your choices… but its inhabitants certainly will! Every decision made (and there will be many) will attribute a certain reputation to your protagonist, and the inhabitants of Albion will have their own opinion on the matter, depending on their personality. NPCs will not hesitate to let you know what they think about it, even in colorful ways.
