Apex Legends x Cyberpunk 2077: All the Details of the "Wildcard" Event
Nighttime E-District map, 8 character skins dedicated to Edgerunners and Cyberpunk 2077, the mythical weapon Skippy, and new cyberware: here's what Respawn revealed in preview

Apex Legends is a constantly evolving world, which, alongside its quarterly seasons (more or less), features a whole host of other content that helps retain a user base that follows the evolution of a game that has practically changed its skin over 29 seasons without betraying the basic peculiarities that made millions of players love it. After the "collabs" that brought characters, weapons, and contexts dear to phenomena like Final Fantasy and Gundam to screens, another phenomenon is arriving that will closely link the Respawn game and the ultra-tech environments of Cyberpunk.
Respawn Entertainment therefore organized a press briefing to preview the contents of this crossover, which, in addition to the CD Projekt video game, also integrates the Edgerunners anime series. The meeting was attended by Eduardo Agostini (world director), Alisa Rastorgueva (art director), and Jeff Wright (lead technical designer), who respectively illustrated the new map, skins, and gameplay of the Wildcard event.

The Return of E-District in Nighttime Version
The core of the update is the return of the nighttime version of the E-District map, long requested by the community. According to the team, this is not a simple re-release: neon lights, fog, and lighting have been intensified, while improving gameplay readability.
The choice is not random: E-District was already visually inspired by Night City, the metropolis of Cyberpunk 2077 (the map's market, for example, recalls Kabuki market). For the event, developers reworked the skyline by adding typical elements of cyberpunk imagery: flying vehicles with searchlights (inspired by the anime series) and a large moon visible in the background, a tribute to the recurring lunar theme in Edgerunners linked to the character of Lucy.
Among the main points of interest:
- Energy Bank → Arasaka Citadel: the central point of the map has been "conquered" by the Arasaka corporation, with logos, red neon lights, and new, more menacing lighting.
- Neon Square: enriched with original graphic materials provided by CD Projekt RED, giant koi fish holograms, and luminous signs.
- Lotus: new vertical platforms and zip-lines for quick movement between rooftops, with luminous petals falling along the buildings.
Throughout the map, widespread references to the Cyberpunk universe have been inserted: Militech branded vehicles and containers, graffiti with gangs like the Tiger Claws and Speed Demons, references to Johnny Silverhand, Night City-style police barricades, and "hacked" billboards showing themed vignettes during gameplay.
The team specified that the nighttime version of E-District will remain exclusive to Wildcard mode for the duration of the event; in the future, it could return to the standard map rotation, but only after removing the Cyberpunk-specific crossover elements, and after seeing the excellent work done, our hope definitely leans in this direction.

Apex Gets a Makeover: Skins, Cosmetics, 8 Characters, Legendary Weapons, and a Mythic Weapon
Alisa Rastorgueva explained the philosophy behind matching Apex Legends with Cyberpunk characters: the goal was not to dress the characters in a "cyberpunk costume," but to find coherent pairings for personality, aesthetics, and, where possible, thematic overlap with in-game abilities.
The 8 character skins announced:
- Axel → Lucy (Edgerunners)
- Sparrow → David Martinez (Edgerunners)
- Rampart → Rebecca (Edgerunners)
- Crypto → Male V (Cyberpunk 2077)
- Lifeline → Female V (Cyberpunk 2077)
- Gibraltar → Royce (Maelstrom gang leader. The "gibbon's" conversion is perhaps the most successful)
- Loba → Panam
- Ash → Lizzy Wizzy
The pairings were decided in agreement with CD Projekt RED, prioritizing visual coherence and affinity between roles (e.g., Lifeline/combat medic and V surviving Night City; Gibraltar/physique and Royce, enhanced gang leader).
On the weapon front, 6 legendary and 2 epic skins are planned, visually and thematically matched to the character skin they are worn with, featuring animated textures (the Mastiff example was shown).
The highlight of the event, however, is the Alternator Mythic, the first mythical weapon skin in an Apex crossover event. It is dedicated to Skippy, the smart pistol with artificial intelligence and its own personality from Cyberpunk 2077. Skippy reacts to player actions with dedicated dialogue lines (recorded together with CD Projekt RED, with the same voice actor as the original game), available in two levels — one more "peaceful" and one more aggressive/"killer" — plus three aesthetic themes linked to the Trauma Team, Moxes, and Barghest factions.
The cosmetic offering is completed by: 7 epic banner frames, 2 legendary ones, 6-8 holo-sprays, and 12 epic stickers.

Gameplay: Cyberware and the Risk of "Cyberpsychosis"
Jeff Wright previewed the new gameplay element introduced in this collab: cyberware, directly inspired by the core concept of Cyberpunk — enhancing the body beyond its natural limits, at a price.
At the start of each match, players choose between two types of cyberware:
- Black Wall Breach (inspired by Lucy): allows temporarily entering a "liminal" dimension similar to the Net, becoming invisible to enemies for a short period. Upon exiting, it generates an EMP pulse that damages nearby enemy shields and grants a movement bonus.
- Sandevistan (inspired by David Martinez): allows rapid and repeated dashes on the ground; in the air, it can only be used twice before needing to touch the ground to recharge.

Each use of cyberware increases an indicator called cybernetic load. If this rises too high, the player risks entering cyberpsychosis: a high-risk/high-reward state where shields and firearm use are lost (only melee attacks remain, but boosted to the point of almost eliminating an opponent with a single blow), in exchange for increased movement speed and extra abilities like wall running.
To manage cybernetic load, "immunoblocker" caches are scattered across the map that completely reset it, as well as portable versions collectible as loot, which partially reduce it. Cyberpsychosis stops upon death (with automatic reset) or by using an immunoblocker to completely "cleanse" oneself and return to normal with shields and weapons.
During the final Q&A, some additional information emerged, which we summarize below:
- The nighttime version of E-District remains exclusive to the event; the team is considering reintegrating it into the standard map in the future (we hope!), but removing the Cyberpunk-themed content.
- The division between characters from the game and the anime series was a shared decision with CD Projekt RED, with a slight prevalence of characters from the video game.
- The main "easter eggs" primarily reside in Skippy's voice lines (voiced by the same voice actor as the game, at least in the English version) and in the moon/graffiti references already visible on the original Cyberpunk map.
- Nessie will not be featured in skins in this event, but the team promises her return in the future.
- The event will last approximately three weeks, during which the mythical weapon Skippy will also be available.
