Epic Games in Crisis, Lays Off Over 1,000 Employees
Fortnite's fluctuating fortunes put Tim Sweeney's company in a difficult position

Unfortunately, in recent years we have had to address the topic of mass layoffs in the video game industry multiple times, and today the news broke that Epic Games, the American company known for Fortnite, Unreal Engine, and the Epic Games Store, will reduce its staff by over 1,000 units, out of a total workforce ranging between 4,000 and 5,000 people. The home of Fortnite was forced to take similar action in 2023, when it laid off over 900 employees.
The Situation at Epic Games
The communication arrived with a note signed by head Tim Sweeney and addressed to all employees. The CEO of Epic attributes the cause of the measure to the contraction of Fortnite in 2025, which led the company to spend more than it earned; the layoffs, along with cost reductions totaling 500 million dollars, will allow the finances to be put back in order.
A recent clue about Epic Games' difficult situation came from Fortnite, when the price of V-bucks was increased. The company's store, however, is growing, but evidently the profits it generates are not enough to tip the scales. For the future, Epic Games intends to continue focusing heavily on Fortnite experiences and to transition to Unreal Engine 6. We provide an interesting perspective on layoffs in the video game industry in this special feature.
