Destiny 2: Bungie to reintegrate removed game content
The franchise will continue in the future, but it will take time
The American studio Bungie has been in a difficult situation for some years now: the Destiny 2 project sadly concluded last June, when what was supposed to be the last update was released, while the newcomer Marathon failed to gather an adequate user base. Bungie has acknowledged that it has lost the trust of players and has decided to address the issue.
Destiny 3 will happen, but not immediately
In a message, studio head Poria Torkan and product director Josh Deane offered their mea culpa, stating their desire to regain player trust and to that end shared Bungie's future plans. First, it is specified that Destiny's journey did not end with the conclusion of Destiny 2; there are still stories to tell, but it will take time because it needs to be done right. We can see this as confirmation that Bungie intends to create Destiny 3, but don't expect it anytime soon.
Bungie returns to Destiny 2
At the conclusion of Destiny 2, the developers were impressed by the players' reaction, who flocked in droves for the final update, sending an unequivocal message. To get an idea, just look at the data provided by SteamDB: when Monument of Triumph was released, the number of concurrent players on Steam suddenly increased tenfold, and the effect is still felt today.
Bungie knows it has a consistent player base and has decided to hold onto it. How? By returning to update Destiny 2. However, these will not be entirely new features, but rather content previously offered and then removed: campaigns, destinations, raids, and so on. Reintegrating this content will require additional work, as it was developed on older versions of Destiny 2 and will therefore need to be updated.
What will become of Marathon?
Marathon was positively received by critics, but as mentioned above, it does not have a large enough user base (here too we can be helped by SteamDB data, with numbers that are merciless even compared to those of the discontinued Destiny 2...). Bungie knows that for Marathon to survive, it needs an evolution and wants to give its work a more survival-oriented feel, to better convey the experience of being on a hostile planet. There are therefore several new features planned, which we discussed extensively in this article.
