If you are among the many lovers of role-playing video games, you probably wouldn't need an introduction to BioWare. For those unfamiliar, this studio was founded in Canada in 1995 and created franchises that became absolute cult classics such as Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Mass Effect, and Dragon Age. Unfortunately, however, in the last decade, it has not lived up to its glorious past.

BioWare's Crisis

BioWare's last game to truly impress critics and audiences was Dragon Age: Inquisition, which dates back to 2014. After this title came Mass Effect: Andromeda (2017), which fell short of parent company Electronic Arts' expectations, then Anthem (2019), whose servers were shut down this year to general indifference, and then the controversial Dragon Age: The Veilguard (2024), which also proved to be a failure.

The Closure and the End of Mass Effect 5

Electronic Arts recently changed ownership and is going through a period of transition, which unfortunately has led to significant cuts, with the aim of reducing costs. We delve into the topic in this special; the American (or rather, Saudi) company has carried out 400 additional layoffs, equivalent to about 3% of the total workforce. Among the affected professionals are also the fifty or so who still worked at BioWare.

With a message on its official blog, BioWare thus announces its closure. The departure of this historic studio also means the cancellation of the next Mass Effect, which was announced in 2020 but was still in the initial stages of development, as the team only focused on it after the release of Veilguard. Given the importance of the Mass Effect franchise, we cannot rule out that Electronic Arts may resurrect it one day, entrusting it to a different developer.
