Imagine making a small online purchase in a video game's digital store, only to see $5,289 charged to your PayPal account: this is what happened to an Arknights: Endfield user shortly after the game's launch, which occurred on January 22. The new Chinese gacha had deactivated PayPal payments within a few hours, which fortunately reduced the scope of the incident.

Arknights: Endfield refunds and gives away items

A Hypergryph spokesperson quantified the incident (via Eurogamer): 1,800 users were involved, for a total of 3,429 unauthorized PayPal orders. Regarding the figures, it amounts to approximately $80,000, and the largest charge was the $5,289 we reported above. Naturally, all transactions have been refunded, but that's not all: to make amends, the Chinese developer kept all the items involved in the players' accounts, effectively giving them away.

Arknights: Endfield gives up on PayPal

The team identified the underlying problem causing the incorrect charges: apparently, it was a glitch between PayPal and the game's official portal. This issue has been fixed, and additional security measures have been implemented to prevent it from happening again in the future. However, PayPal will remain deactivated on Arknights: Endfield for a while longer as a precautionary measure: the payment method will only be re-enabled after extensive testing has definitively ruled out any danger.
