Above the Below - Idris Elba Trapped in the Depths
Inside their spacecraft, three astronauts find themselves in a hostile environment

The first images of Above the Below show Idris Elba grappling with an extreme survival mission after an accident hurls three astronauts into the ocean's depths. The Lionsgate sci-fi thriller will arrive in US cinemas on December 4.
Elba plays one of the crew members alongside Caitlin FitzGerald and Hero Fiennes Tiffin. The actor, whom we recently saw in the reboot of Masters of the Universe, co-directed the film with Martin Owen, tackling a story where danger comes not from space but from water.
A Race Against Oxygen

After a dramatic accident during re-entry to Earth, three astronauts survive the impact with the ocean but remain trapped underwater with rapidly depleting oxygen reserves. Reaching the surface becomes a desperate challenge, destined to test their ability to collaborate.
In an interview with Collider, Elba emphasized the production's practical approach. The spacecraft was built and submerged in water, allowing numerous underwater sequences to be filmed without relying exclusively on digital effects. A choice designed to accentuate the sense of claustrophobia that runs through the narrative.
The screenplay is penned by Elizabeth Morris, Matthew Mitchell, and Vicki Sargent. With a runtime of 85 minutes, Above the Below focuses on a compact narrative, where every escape attempt can turn into a death sentence. For now, no Italian release date in cinemas and yet another risk of direct streaming platform release.
