Ghost Of Yotei - One-on-one with the creator | interview

A few days before the launch, we were invited by Playstation Italy to participate in an exclusive event that gave us the opportunity to interview and talk with Nate Fox, creator of one of this year's most anticipated games, Ghost of Yotei, the highly anticipated sequel to the multi-acclaimed Ghost Of Tsushima.

An interview that helped us understand his vision for the title more closely, and even more so, to reveal some behind-the-scenes details related to the game's development.

In the meantime, we remind you that you can already find the game review on our pages. Below is our interview:

Nate Fox, interview with the creator of Ghost of Yotei

Gamesurf: "What was the single most unexpected development moment that may have significantly changed or helped the direction of the game?"

Nate Fox: When we got to the point of having to create a trailer to show gamers what we were working on, we put together a montage of the game that mainly showed Atsu and where the story took place, but I felt that this trailer didn't have enough heart to fully capture attention and intrigue players. We tried to insert something more to make it come alive and in the end we decided to insert a simple wolf. Initially a simple character, almost in the background, but in that trailer it blossomed and became much more than a small element; it became a representation of Atsu's wild lawlessness and unbridled desire for revenge.

It was completely unexpected and from that moment the wolf grew more and more, becoming an important element of the gameplay and a true metaphor for Atsu's journey itself.

Gamesurf: "If you had to choose just one element of the game that, in your opinion, will surprise fans of Ghost of Tsushima/Yotei in a way they don't expect, what would it be and why?"

Nate Fox: In Ghost Of Tsushima, the protagonist Jin Sakai was a samurai trained to fight according to Bushido, the samurai code. In Ghost Of Yotei, Atsu doesn't care about codes and rules, she's ready to do anything to win a battle, and players will be surprised by the sense of improvisation they'll have during combat. They'll be able to disarm the enemy, pick up their weapon from the ground and throw it into the guts of another enemy. Atsu will be able to throw sand in people's faces to stun them and stab them properly. She'll be able to kick enemies off a mountain with a well-aimed kick. The lethality of combat is present in Ghost Of Yotei as it was in Ghost Of Tsushima. We are still facing a combat game focused on the Katana, but with the added energy and spectacularity of the improvisation factor, and the player will have much more in their hands and much more freedom of approach to battles

Gamesurf: "Given that the game takes place 300 years after the events of Tsushima, is there an element inherited from the first chapter, perhaps an object or a place, that the most attentive and prepared players will be able to recognize and that has a special meaning for you?"

Nate Fox: Players of Ghost Of Tsushima will recognize the "guiding wind" that will help players reach desired locations. Guiding birds, like the yellow one, will help find secrets around the game world, and foxes are present again, which will also guide you to secret places. Nature will once again be by your side in Ghost Of Yotei, because the land wants you, players, to win against the enemies that hinder the wilderness.

Gamesurf: Thank you very much Nate for this interview and good luck with the launch of your new game, Ghost Of Yotei

We remind you that Ghost Of Yotei will be released on October 2nd 2025 exclusively on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro.

We thank Playstation Italy for giving us this great opportunity.
