There are series that change over the years, renew themselves, and try new ideas, but still manage to keep their soul intact. Yoshi is precisely one of these.

Born as a simple companion to Mario, the friendly green dinosaur has slowly managed to carve out his own space, becoming the protagonist of adventures with a unique character. Colors everywhere, imaginative worlds, immediate gameplay, and that carefree and creative way of telling the adventure have become, over time, the true hallmark of the series. With Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, Nintendo seems to have finally found the perfect meeting point between tradition and innovation, giving life to a title that has all the credentials to become one of the iconic platformers on Nintendo Switch 2.

Yoshi and the Mysterious Book – Review: A Masterpiece on Switch 2 of Wonder and Exploration

From the very first minutes with Yoshi, the game immediately manages to convey something special, not only for its extraordinarily fascinating artistic style, but above all for the idea behind the entire experience: to transform exploration into continuous discovery, making the player feel an integral part of a gigantic living book full of mysterious creatures, secrets, and small details hidden everywhere. It's a simple concept, but extremely Nintendo-esque in its philosophy. It doesn't aim for forced spectacle or the obsessive pursuit of realism, but for wonder. And in an industry that often seems to chase only increasingly gigantic and cinematic productions, seeing a title capable of putting imagination, curiosity, and lightness at the center of the gaming experience is something tremendously magical and precious.

The new exclusive for Nintendo Switch 2 seems to inherit the legacy of experiences like Yoshi's Island, Yoshi's Woolly World, and Yoshi's Crafted World, but at the same time tries to build something different, more experimental, and more focused on environmental interaction. The result is an adventure with a relaxed but incredibly engaging pace, capable of continuously delivering new surprises.

Yoshi and the Mysterious Book: the idea that changes everything

When Nintendo decides to bring Yoshi back with a completely new chapter, attention inevitably rises immediately, not because the series necessarily needs to reinvent itself every time, but because historically every title dedicated to the little green dinosaur has always tried to distinguish itself through its own precise artistic identity. And this time, things don't seem to be different.

Yoshi and the Mysterious Book presents itself as a 2D platform adventure with a strong emphasis on exploration, discovery, and interaction with the creatures that inhabit the game world. The underlying narrative idea revolves around a mysterious talking encyclopedia named Enzo, which suddenly crashed on Yoshi's Island. Its pages contain dozens of unknown creatures, each with different characteristics, behaviors, and abilities. From this, the protagonist's journey begins, as he literally enters the book to discover all the secrets hidden within its pages.

It's a brilliant concept because it transforms the classic level progression into something more organic and narratively coherent. Each chapter of the book seems to be a living ecosystem, rich in interactions and full of surprises, where the player doesn't just reach the end of the stage, but is continuously encouraged to experiment. Nintendo seems to have built the entire experience around a sense of curiosity.

And it is precisely here that the title begins to differentiate itself from many other modern platformers. Where other games focus on extreme challenge or speed, Yoshi and the Mysterious Book seems to want to slow down the pace, inviting the player to observe, try, explore, and interact. It is not an adventure built to stress, but to continuously amaze.

Artistically, the visual impact is immediately very strong. The graphic style recalls a kind of animated illustrated book, with environments that seem handmade and characters characterized by incredibly convincing and personality-filled animations. There is something extremely warm and welcoming in every scene, almost as if Nintendo had wanted to transform the game into an interactive fairy tale.

The feeling is that Switch 2 is becoming the perfect home for productions of this type, with games that do not necessarily seek to impress with photorealism, but that exploit the new hardware power to bring to life artistic worlds richer, more fluid, and more colorful than ever.

Enzo, the living book that transforms adventure into discovery

The plot of Yoshi and the Mysterious Book starts from a premise as simple as it is irresistible. One day, a gigantic living encyclopedia named Enzo mysteriously falls from the sky. Its pages contain information about strange unknown creatures and completely unexplored habitats. Naturally, Yoshi decides to dive into the book to discover what is hidden within those worlds.

Nintendo doesn't seem to want to build a dramatic or particularly complex narrative, and honestly, it wouldn't even need to, but focuses entirely on curiosity and discovery. And in fact, this time too, as in previous chapters of the series, the magic will arise precisely from this.

Each page of the book represents a new microcosm, with unique creatures, specific mechanics, and completely different environments, with dynamic ecosystems where living beings react to the player's actions in different ways: some make flowers bloom, others produce bubbles, still others modify the surrounding terrain or allow access to secret areas.

This narrative structure seems to give the game an extremely natural sense of progression. The more you discover, the more the book expands. The more you study the creatures, the more new chapters and new exploration possibilities are unlocked. It's an approach that transforms the player's curiosity into the true engine of the adventure.

Also interesting is the possibility of assigning names to the creatures encountered, an apparently secondary detail but one that further strengthens the bond between the player and the game world. It is a choice that makes the experience more personal and once again demonstrates how much Nintendo wants to focus on emotional involvement and wonder.

There are also references to the series' past. Some mechanics recall

a lot of Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, while the general tone seems to inherit some of the narrative delicacy seen in the most recent chapters dedicated to Yoshi. However, everything appears reinterpreted with a much more exploratory and contemplative direction, and honestly, it's hard not to be captivated by this approach.

In a landscape full of games that constantly try to be more chaotic, faster, and more spectacular, seeing a title that instead focuses on the sense of discovery and the sweetness of adventure is almost disarming.

Gameplay: creatures, eggs, and freedom – a platformer that always surprises

The gameplay of Yoshi and the Mysterious Book undoubtedly represents the beating heart of the entire adventure and is also the aspect that most manages to surprise with its variety, creativity, and attention to ideas. Nintendo has taken all the historical mechanics of the series – the famous flutter jump, the ability to swallow enemies, the use of eggs, and Yoshi's tongue to interact with the environment – and integrated them into a much more dynamic, deep, and possibility-rich structure than in the past.

The constant feeling, while playing, is that of being in front of a world that continuously invites discovery. Each level is not built just to be traversed, but to be observed, studied, and experimented with. And it is precisely here that one of the most brilliant ideas of the entire production comes into play: the creatures present within the stories of the mysterious book.

Each creature possesses unique characteristics that modify the way stages are approached. Some allow you to alter the surrounding environment, others make new paths appear or activate special mechanics that completely change the rhythm of exploration. In some cases, they can be carried on Yoshi's back to reach hidden areas, while others offer temporary abilities essential for overcoming environmental puzzles or discovering secrets perfectly camouflaged in the scenery.

And it is precisely this continuous interaction that makes the gameplay so fresh and engaging. The game never limits itself to being a simple traditional platformer, but has been designed and created with levels full of small details, insights, and situations that push the player to constantly try something different. Each time, that pleasant curiosity arises to understand “what if I tried to do this?”, and it is a feeling that accompanies practically the entire adventure.

The best thing is that everything works with incredible naturalness. Each mechanic is introduced gradually and intelligently, leaving the player the pleasure of discovery without ever breaking the rhythm of the experience. It is that typically Nintendo philosophy that manages to transform simple ideas into something surprisingly deep and creative.

In many moments, the game recalls that experimental freedom seen in the best chapters of Super Mario Bros. Wonder, especially in its ability to continuously surprise with ever-new situations. But Yoshi and the Mysterious Book maintains its own personality, more relaxed, fairytale-like, and strongly based on exploration. And it is precisely this clear and recognizable identity that manages to make the entire experience incredibly fascinating from beginning to end.

Even total completion requires much more effort than it might initially seem. Completing the game 100% requires time, attention, and a lot of dedication, because many secrets are clearly designed to reward the most curious players who pay attention to details. It's not just about skill, but also about observation, memory, and the desire to truly explore every single page of the book.

On the difficulty front, moreover, Nintendo has calibrated the experience excellently. The first few hours appear deliberately more accessible and relaxed, allowing anyone to get familiar with the mechanics without excessive pressure. But as you progress, the challenge level grows significantly and, above all, intelligently. Stages begin to require greater precision in jumps, quicker reflexes, and an increasingly deeper understanding of environmental interactions and the abilities of the creatures encountered during the adventure.

The most successful aspect is that the game never becomes frustrating, managing instead to constantly maintain that light, creative, and magical atmosphere typical of the series, while hiding beneath its colorful aesthetic increasingly elaborate levels rich in situations capable of truly testing the player. And as per the best tradition of Yoshi titles, the most challenging trials emerge especially in optional content and in the pursuit of perfect completion.

Graphics and audio: a fairytale artistic style, one of the best on Switch 2

From a technical point of view, Yoshi and the Mysterious Book rightfully and powerfully enters the top list of the most fascinating first-party titles seen so far on Nintendo Switch 2.

The artistic style is simply wonderful. Nintendo continues to demonstrate how it is not necessary to chase realism to create something visually impressive. The environments seem hand-painted, with materials reminiscent of paper, cardboard, watercolors, and stop-motion animated models, and every screen conveys personality and magic.

The animations are probably the most impressive aspect. Yoshi appears incredibly expressive, fluid, and full of small details that bring the character to life. The creatures encountered during the journey are also animated with great care, contributing to giving the game world a feeling of constant vitality.

Switch 2 seems to allow for a much higher visual density than in the past, with richer scenarios, greater background depth, and an overall fluidity that significantly elevates the overall visual impact. Loading times are also very fast, and overall, the technical stability is extremely convincing.

The sound compartment is also of excellent quality, with the soundtrack always managing to maintain that sweet, cheerful, and relaxing atmosphere typical of the series, but with richer arrangements and more elaborate orchestrations than in the past. The music perfectly accompanies the tone of the adventure, helping to create a continuous feeling of wonder and serenity.

The sound effects, as is Nintendo's tradition, are immediately recognizable and full of personality: every jump, every Yoshi sound, every interaction with the creatures seems designed to further strengthen the sense of immersion in the game world.

The overall artistic direction is masterful, finding a perfect balance between nostalgia and innovation. The game clearly recalls the history of the series, but without ever appearing derivative or excessively conservative.

Yoshi and the Mysterious Book

Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is yet another demonstration of how Nintendo continues to be unique in transforming seemingly simple ideas into memorable experiences. Behind its bright colors and accessibility lies a surprisingly deep adventure, capable of combining platforming, exploration, puzzles, and environmental interaction with disarming naturalness. But it is above all the extraordinary artistic direction that leaves its mark: every scenario, animation, and detail seems to come directly from an interactive fairy tale, giving the game a very strong personality and continuous charm from beginning to end. It is a game that aims not only at immediate fun, but at that feeling of continuous wonder that has always represented the true strength of Nintendo's philosophy. Once again, the Kyoto house has hit the mark, creating a magical, creative, and personality-filled title, destined to leave its mark far beyond its apparent simplicity.
