The plot of One Battle After Another
The story moves between the shadows of the past and the violence of the present. Sixteen years after ending their militancy, a group of former revolutionaries are forced back into action when a historical enemy, believed to have disappeared, re-emerges with lethal intentions. The mission is clear: save the daughter of one of them before it's too late. But the journey will be anything but simple. Between unresolved memories, internal conflicts, and an America that has changed (or perhaps not), the film tells a physical and ideological battle.
The narrative style promises to be a balance between black comedy and action, with a tone that closely resembles the grotesque and visionary universe of Pynchon, an author Anderson had already paid homage to in Inherent Vice.
The cast of One Battle After Another: the return of Leonardo DiCaprio
Leading the cast is Leonardo DiCaprio (an actor also known for Titanic, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, The Revenant, The Wolf of Wall Street, The Aviator, Django Unchained, Killers of the Flower Moon, The Departed, Don't Look Up), who returns in a starring role playing Bob Ferguson, a former idealist and father of the girl to be saved.
Alongside him are top-tier names: Sean Penn will be the charismatic and unstable Colonel Lockjaw, Benicio del Toro will play the cryptic Sensei Sergio, while Regina Hall will portray Deandra, a central figure in the group.
The cast is completed by Teyana Taylor, Chase Infiniti, Alana Haim, Wood Harris, and Shayna McHayle. A diverse and talented ensemble.
The director of One Battle After Another: Paul Thomas Anderson
With One Battle After Another, Paul Thomas Anderson continues his exploration of the margins of American society, alternating drama and irony, auteur cinema and pop narration. The director once again collaborates with cinematographer Michael Bauman, opting again for 35mm film in VistaVision format, an aesthetic choice that gives the film a unique visual imprint.
Anderson wrote, produced, and directed the film, which also represents his last collaboration with his longtime first assistant director Adam Somner, who passed away in 2024.
One Battle After Another, the release date: when does the film come out?
The film was released in Italian cinemas on September 25, 2025, in the middle of Oscar season. Warner Bros. chose to postpone the release from the initial date (August 8) precisely to aim for the Academy Awards. This is Anderson's first film to also be distributed in IMAX format, highlighting the project's visual ambition.
The home video edition will be available from January 20, 2026.

One Battle After Another, from book to film
Although not a direct adaptation, One Battle After Another is loosely inspired by Thomas Pynchon's novel Vineland, published in 1990. This is not the first time Paul Thomas Anderson has tackled the American author: in 2014, he already brought Inherent Vice to the big screen. In this new project, Anderson reinterprets some thematic and narrative elements of the book, such as post-1960s disillusionment, governmental paranoia, and family fragmentation, reworking them in a more action-oriented and grotesque key.
