X-Files – I Want to Believe: The Censored Director’s Cut on Disney+
The second film with Mulder and Scully arrived in theaters with the idea of a standalone cinematic SF thriller

Mutilated bodies, disturbing visions, and chilling atmospheres: X-Files - I Want to Believe could finally show the darker side imagined by Chris Carter almost twenty years ago. A reference to a “Director’s Cut” of the 2008 film has surprisingly appeared on Disney+, scheduled for June 11, 2026 as special content for the platform.
The second feature film dedicated to Mulder and Scully arrived in theaters with the idea of bringing the structure of the series' classic self-contained cases back to cinema, a standalone cinematic SF thriller. However, the final result was profoundly scaled back during production to achieve a PG-13 rating (restricted to those under 13 unless accompanied by a parent or guardian), sacrificing much of the horror elements initially conceived by the series creator.
Chris Carter Recovers Unseen Horror Version

In recent months, Carter had already spoken publicly about the project, explaining that he wanted to restore the film to its original form, much darker and more disturbing than the version released in cinemas. According to the director, the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) imposed further cuts even after the interventions requested by Fox, severely limiting the film's more extreme component.
It remains to be seen whether Disney+ will directly publish the new complete cut or special content dedicated to the making of the Director's Cut. In any case, for many X-Files fans, it could be an opportunity to rediscover one of the most controversial chapters of the entire saga.
