Andrzej Sapkowski, author of The Witcher literary saga, has never had a great relationship with CD Projekt Red, the company that created The Witcher video games, consecrating the franchise globally. The relationship has soured over time, also due to monetary disputes: it's no surprise then that the Polish writer commented with marked annoyance on what he sees as a CD Projekt invention.

The Witcher Schools Do Not Exist in the Books

In the first volume of the saga, The Last Wish, Sapkowski makes a vague reference to a "wolf school", an idea that he later deemed unworthy of further development, incorrect from a narrative point of view, and even detrimental to the plot: for this reason, there were never any further references to schools in the books, which Sapkowski sarcastically calls "Witcher Gryffindors" (via PC Gamer).

However, that single sentence was enough for the adaptors to conceive not only the school Geralt belongs to in the video games, but even to create additional Witcher schools, an addition Sapkowski considers absolutely superfluous. In the future, the Polish author might ask to remove the reference to the school from the book, hoping to resolve the misunderstanding. Or, he might decide to delve into the topic himself, clarifying the meaning behind the Witcher medallions. Rather, if you are fascinated by this fantasy universe but don't know where to start, we explain it to you in this special.
