Nintendo has finally confirmed what fans have been waiting for: the sequel to the blockbuster film The Super Mario Bros. Movie is in production and will be titled The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. The announcement came during the Nintendo Direct on September 12, 2025, coinciding with the celebrations for the 40th anniversary of the famous franchise. A first teaser trailer made the wait even more electrifying.

The project is once again in the hands of Illumination, the animation studio known for Minions and Despicable Me, in collaboration with Nintendo and Universal Pictures. Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic will return to direct, while the screenplay will once again be penned by Matthew Fogel, who also wrote the first chapter.

The teaser shown during the Nintendo Direct offers a brief but evocative scene: Mario, asleep under a tree in the Mushroom Kingdom, as the camera slowly rises towards a starry sky. In the background, the unforgettable Super Mario Galaxy theme music plays, anticipating the new space journey of the world's most famous plumber.

When is The Super Mario Galaxy Movie coming out?

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will debut on April 3, 2026 in the United States and the United Kingdom, while in Japan the release is scheduled for April 24. There is no official date yet for Italy, but it is very likely that the distribution will take place simultaneously with or shortly after the first international releases.

What is The Super Mario Galaxy Movie about?

The official plot has not yet been revealed, but the title speaks for itself: the film will draw inspiration from Super Mario Galaxy, the famous video game released in 2007 on Nintendo Wii. Just like in the original adventure, Mario will be propelled into deep space, where he will have to chase Bowser through distant galaxies to save Princess Peach and restore balance to the universe.
