The Last of Us Nears Its End - HBO Prepares for the Finale
From the beginning, it was clear that adapting the second video game would take time

The television journey of The Last of Us seems to be decisively heading towards its conclusion. Not due to a lack of ideas or signs of fatigue, but due to a precise narrative choice: to tell the entire story without unnecessarily prolonging it. According to leaks from HBO, the third season is also destined to be the last.
This direction isn't sudden. From the beginning, the creators had made it clear that adapting the second video game would take time, but also moderation. The second season only covered a portion of the original material, leaving room for a compact and intense final narrative arc, without transitional seasons.
The Right Narrative Conclusion
Neil Druckmann's step back, who chose to refocus on Naughty Dog after the second season, may have contributed. Officially, there's no direct link, but the co-creator's departure likely reinforced the idea of bringing the story to the most solid close possible.
The third season is expected to shift the point of view, following a structure similar to that of the game and focusing on new emotional balances. Craig Mazin has already anticipated that it will be a different season, but consistent with the tone of the series.
If confirmed, the farewell of The Last of Us would arrive as a rare example of a successful series capable of stopping at the right moment.
