Star Citizen Surpasses $1 Billion in Funding
A historic milestone, but less impressive than it might seem
British game designer Chris Roberts began working on the Star Citizen project back in 2010. Two years later, a successful crowdfunding campaign was launched to finance the game, and since 2013, the experience has been open to users. Formally, Star Citizen has not yet reached version 1.0, but the current build already provides access to a well-defined space simulation, and there are big updates on the way, such as the single-player campaign Squadron 42.
How much funding has Star Citizen raised?
The official website reports the total funds raised by Star Citizen, and it's a nine-figure sum: to date, it has surpassed one billion dollars. Over six and a half million users have contributed. The amount of funding might seem astonishing; however, the number should be put into perspective, considering that the fundraising has been ongoing for over 13 years, and especially that other projects, such as the most successful live service games, can easily exceed a billion in less than a year.
