Craig Brewer directs a musical melodrama that uses Neil Diamond's repertoire as a narrative engine, yet avoids turning it into a mere tribute to the American artist. Protagonists Mike and Claire are fragile souls who find in music not only a refuge but also a way to redefine themselves.

Hugh Jackman delivers yet another great emotional performance, conveying the contradictions of a man battling the ghosts of the past. Kate Hudson responds with a warm and spontaneous portrayal, building a credible relationship that grows through performances and daily struggles.

The Soundtrack of a Second Chance

Diamond's songs are not relegated to the background as nostalgic accompaniment. Famous tracks like Sweet Caroline or Song Sung Blue become an integral part of the story, reflecting the hopes, disappointments, and moments of rebirth of the protagonists. Brewer maintains a sober approach without seeking sentimental shortcuts, letting the characters and music guide the emotion.

The result is a film about second chances, the strength of human bonds, and the value that a shared passion can take on. While following familiar narrative paths, Song Sung Blue finds authenticity in the sincerity with which it observes the protagonists and respects Neil Diamond's musical legacy. Here is Elisa Giudici's artistic review.

Digitally shot at 8.6K resolution with some SD/NTSC footage (Sony CineAlta Venice 2, Sony DCR-TRV120, and Sony DVW-700WS cameras) finalized on a 4K master, from which this 2K edition was created, in 1.85:1 format (1920 x 1080/23.97p), AVC/MPEG-4 encoding on a dual-layer BD-50. The video rendition is excellent, characterized by an extremely defined picture that enhances close-ups and environmental details.

The faces of Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson reveal every nuance of makeup and complexion, while costumes, musical instruments, and props show remarkable material richness. The color palette focuses on intense and saturated colors, particularly effective during stage performances, where lights and outfits stand out with great vibrancy. The image depth is also convincing, supported by solid blacks.

The Italian Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 (754 kbps) offers a decent rendition of dialogue, echoes, ambient noises, and the notable musical component for a show that keeps attention alive. The original Dolby TrueHD 7.1 (24 bit) provides superior immersion, even if not strictly reference quality. Especially in the frequent musical sequences, the rear channels enhance instruments and atmosphere with excellent separation and detail. The low range is solid, while environmental effects like plane flyovers and the bar fight effectively utilize the entire soundstage. This track is indeed the right one to immerse oneself in the center of the scene, for a Home Theater system with true separate channels.

Among the extras, don't miss the film commentary by director, screenwriter, and producer Craig Brewer. There are also two extended musical performances, Crunchy Granola Suite and Sweet Caroline, along with a series of short featurettes totaling about 18 minutes: here we find the protagonists and director delving into the true story that inspired the film, the work on musical performances, casting choices, and the definition of the look, including costumes and makeup. Italian subtitles are included.
