Resident Evil Requiem: Details on the Two Protagonists

Capcom used The Game Awards as a showcase to announce a major new detail about the highly anticipated Resident Evil Requiem: during the Los Angeles show, the return of Leon Kennedy, one of the series' most famous and beloved characters, was revealed, and he will be playable. But how is his presence balanced with that of Grace Ashcroft? The game's creators themselves are clarifying this point.

How Resident Evil Requiem Works

Koshi Nakanishi and Masato Kumazawa, director and producer of Requiem respectively, explained the system in an interview (via Automaton Media). The game will offer a single campaign, with two protagonists who will be controlled alternately, at different times. The Resident Evil series is no stranger to such setups: if you recall, the dual protagonist mechanic was introduced back in RE Zero, more than 20 years ago.

Leon and Grace, the Two Protagonists

The two main characters are polar opposites in terms of characterization: Leon is a fearless veteran, while Grace is... a scaredy-cat. Their gameplay sections will be very different: Leon's will be focused on action and inspired by RE 4, while Grace's will be more pure horror and inspired by RE 2. At certain points, the two will meet. Players will therefore have to switch from Leon's action-packed sequences to Grace's tense ones, a dualism that will also allow for tension release.

Leon's Return to Raccoon City

To enjoy Requiem, it won't be necessary to know the previous chapters of the series, but doing so would allow players to appreciate Leon Kennedy's evolution: this character was last featured in RE 6, and time has passed since then. We will therefore find a different Leon, perhaps more mature. Furthermore, for Leon, this is his first return to Raccoon City after escaping the catastrophe: it will be interesting to witness his reaction.
