Nintendo Switch 2: New Smaller Cartridge Formats?
Would allow for physical editions of more games
As you all surely know, in recent years the video game market has shifted more and more from physical to digital format: it's perfectly normal, even for those who still appreciate the act of owning the game box - and perhaps the various gadgets contained in a Limited Edition - to find a download code for the product from the relevant digital platform inside.
Nintendo had also somewhat adapted to this new custom when it introduced the concept of the Key Card for its new console, Switch 2. However, the house of Mario has not abandoned the concept of the Cartridge - if you're old enough to still use the term - although this seemed to be limited to certain high-priced games, probably due to the production cost of the media.
From ININ Games, producers of R-Type Dimensions 3 - as reported by Wario64 - we learn that Nintendo has recently made available new Cartridge formats, with smaller capacities but consequently lower costs, in order to allow the distribution of budget-priced games on this format as well.
in the same update, ININ Games also confirms that Nintendo announced two new smaller cartridge sizes for Nintendo Switch 2 games https://t.co/PJND7i6vFO

According to the announcement reported by Wario64, the only difference would be that physical editions - with the exception of the Special Edition already sold in pre-order - will cost €10 more than their digital counterparts.
However, caution is advised because a few hours after publication, ININ's statement was removed, specifying that Nintendo has not officially released any statements regarding these new Cartridge formats and that therefore what was previously reported should not be taken as an official announcement from Nintendo.

Due to these latest clarifications, we are forced to label the news as a Rumor, pending official statements from Nintendo.
R-Type Dimensions 3 has been announced, in addition to Nintendo Switch 2, for PC and PS5. The release is set for May 2026.
