Miami Vice '85 Slips to 2028: Reboot More Ambitious Than Expected
Recapturing the soul of the original series without limiting it to an aesthetic exercise

The return of Miami Vice is taking its time, but with a precise goal: to arrive in theaters with a strong identity. The new version directed by Joseph Kosinski has been moved to May 2028, a date that suggests blockbuster ambitions rather than a simple nostalgia operation.
Behind the postponement is not uncertainty, but strategy. The project aims to carve out space in a competitive calendar, presenting itself as a significant title.
Return to Origins, But With Bigger Ambitions

The idea behind Miami Vice '85 is to recapture the soul of the original series without limiting it to an aesthetic exercise. The story will return to 1980s Miami, closely following the atmosphere of the pilot and the first season, with detectives Crockett and Tubbs immersed in luxury, illegal trafficking, and social tensions.
Fresh off the success of Top Gun: Maverick, Kosinski wants to push the cinematic aspect, designing the film for the big screen in IMAX format. The goal is to transform the city into a central narrative element, emphasizing the contrast between its polished surface and criminal reality.
Dan Gilroy is on the screenplay, a name that hints at a darker, more analytical tone. On the casting front, rumors remain strong, indicating Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler as protagonists, although official confirmation is still pending. A completely different approach was taken by the series' creator, Michael Mann, when he reinterpreted Miami Vice in a modern key with the wonderful film he directed in 2006, with Crockett and Tubbs played by Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx.
