Marathon looks to 2027 and aims to break free from extraction

The first six months of Marathon on the market have not gone in the best way: the title has failed to attract the necessary user base to remain operational and, being a game conceived as a continuous service over the years, this is a huge problem for Bungie. The developer has already tried to correct course, but to save the fate of its creation, more decisive changes are needed.

The big March 2027 update

A few days after talking about the studio's next moves, Bungie returns to communicate with its fans, with a new message focusing on Marathon. The game will receive an "interim" update in October, followed by the more substantial Symbiosis in December, but the real big news should arrive in March 2027. On that date, the progress made will converge into a broader evolution, from which an interconnected system of permanent PvE, PvP, and PvPvE experiences will emerge.

The March update will also affect fundamental aspects, such as Shell upgrades and progression, or the narrative. Among the new content, a new zone and additional alien combatants are to be expected. Bungie has therefore given itself about six months to transform Marathon into something broader, of which extraction is only a part. The studio's intention is to lay the foundations on which to build the Marathon of the future; we will see how the situation evolves.
