PlayStation to bid farewell to physical media from 2028
New games will be released exclusively in digital format
For old-school gamers, those who still love to surround themselves with physical copies, cartridges, or Blu-Rays in the digital age, this news will come as a harsh blow: one of the main industry players intends to permanently abandon physical media. This is Sony, which has made this historic decision because most users have now shifted towards the digital format.
No more discs in PlayStation boxes
As specified in the announcement, the change will affect all PlayStation console games released from January 2028 onwards. After that date, retailers will only distribute disc-less editions (i.e., cases containing only a code, as with GTA 6). Titles arriving before 2028 are not affected by the measure. A corollary of this decision is that PlayStation 6 will be a digital-only console, or at most will have a Blu-Ray player to be purchased separately to run PS5 games.
PS3 and Vita: digital store closing
But that's not all concerning Sony's gaming ecosystem: the Japanese company announces the closure of the PlayStation Store on PlayStation 3 and PS Vita platforms, which have become too obsolete to continue support. The closure will take place in July 2027: from that date, it will no longer be possible to make purchases on the digital store of the two consoles.
