The first trailer for Klara and the Sun has arrived, a film adaptation of the novel of the same name by Kazuo Ishiguro that marks an unexpected turn in Taika Waititi's career. The New Zealand director temporarily sets aside the lighter tones that have characterized much of his filmography to tackle an intimate and deeply emotional story.

The film stars Jenna Ortega as Klara, an Artificial Friend designed to provide companionship to humans. When she enters the life of the young Josie, played by Mia Tharia, a bond is formed that is destined to become the core of the entire story.

A Sci-Fi Far from Traditional Schemes

The trailer's images suggest a measured and reflective sci-fi, more interested in feelings than in the spectacular aspects of the genre. Rather than imagining conflicts between humans and machines, the film seems to focus on the bonds that arise between individuals unable to overcome their isolation.

Waititi himself explained that he abandoned the idea of adapting the novel in his usual ironic style, preferring to respect its original identity and atmosphere. The first images confirm this approach.

Alongside Jenna Ortega are Amy Adams, Steve Buscemi, Natasha Lyonne, Aran Murphy, and Mia Tharia. Production is also entrusted to David Heyman, the long-time producer of the Harry Potter film series. The release in US theaters is scheduled for October 23, and the trailer hints at a work that uses science fiction to explore human emotions and relationships rather than to imagine conflicts between humans and machines.
